1st Lake To Freeze?
I was recently reading through some old fishing journals and the last time I got out on the ice in the month of December was 2005. It was the 18th of December and it was my first time ever ice fishing - I was on Lake Arthur. Ever since then it was either mid January or even a short spell in February when I could get on safe ice. So here's my question: What lake in western PA is usually the first lake to have safe ice? I thinking Eaton? I've never fished Eaton. High Point or Yellow Creek Lake due to elevation? I know at best it's still going to be a few weeks away but this will give me something to think about while my wife is talking to me.

Have to agree with Kokanee, Lake Rowena in Ebensburg. I live in Indiana and I can always figure Ebensburg is five degrees colder than whatever we have for the temperature. The lake is stocked with "pelletheads" (fall&winter)but also has some stunted panfish, bass, and muskie. Last year I was on Dec 21st and the year before that Dec 8th. It usually satisfies the urge to drill holes until the other lakes lock up. One other one that usually freezes early is Black Moshannon due to its elevation. It's a good deal bigger so seems to be just a little bit behind Rowena. It should be getting close. Be safe though. Lou
