ORIGINAL: tull66 ORIGINAL: Esox_Hunter It is time to adapt if you think deer hunting in this state is sad. I'm not sure that makes any sense. I don't adapt to things I don't like, I try to change them. To each their own. Even IF regs would change in your favor(whatever that may be) and you know anything about how quickly the gubberment moves, you are in for a long wait...

Hey Wayne I wasn't trying to belittle you!! From the pic it just looks thin like you said. so I was just sayin. ((BTW taking a NICE buck in gun season with a bow is AWESOME )) I thought about the size of that big rack making the head and neck kinda smaller after I posted, thinking that could be the case. which I'm sure it was. Either way GREAT JOB BESAFEANDGOODLUCK Dave

BigTuna, I never said that Wayne LIED about the weight!!! From the pic it looks to be a thinner deer, I know pics always don't tell the real story either. And I too have harvested more deer than YOU care TO KNOW. Oh BTW I can age a deer very well and guess a weight of a deer just as well. Experience from taking a substantial amount deer should teach you how to age and guess weight of deer within a few pounds. RIGHT???????

I don't see anything sad about the results of this years season thus far. I have spoken with lots of very happy hunters this year and had a great year myself. It is time to adapt if you think deer hunting in this state is sad. There is no doubt that a small percentage of PA hunters still have good hunting. But ,for the thousands of others that have much poorer hunting, adapting is not the answer. We are currently harvesting all the deer that can be harvested on a sustainable basis,so if hunters scout more, hunt harder or move to new areas, the number of successful hunters will not increase. The only thing that will result in more successful hunters is allowing the herd to increase.

If I invited 10 guys who are not or have not harvested in the past 4-5 years here to hunt and half of them shoot a deer how is that no increasing the number of successful hunters ????????? Give us back our 10,000 antlerless tags for 2F and see how many more succesful hunters you get...

Easy on that old dude ,kill them all comment---Actually, it's more the older guys that saw through the smokescreen Alt and the PGC used to gather support for HR and are, and have been against what has been going on. Doc is an exception and it had more to do with his dependence on the PGC and DCNR for information for the website he was trying to establish. He in no way is typical of a Pennsylvania sportsmen. Imagine not having fired a shot at a legal buck in a decade of hunting and still pretending to support what is going on.

I don't think it is about age, it is about themselves. Very few look at the big picture, what's best for all in the long run. Too many look at filling their freezer and hanging big antlers on their wall. I said before I like big antlers, but not if that means todays kids are showing a lack of interest in deer hunting due to not seeing any/many.

That's pretty accurate. May I add, anyone who experienced PA deer season during the heyday knows what we have lost and prefers beer over Koolaid.

It would only increase the number of successful hunters if you can guarantee that five other didn't harvest a deer because of the five deer harvested. The fact is that more hunters can only be successful on a sustainable basis if recruitment increases and that will only happen when the PGC allows the herd to increase or is unable to prevent it from increasing.

My 6pt from 2E harvested yesterday morning. Not a giant deer, but big bodied, and the rack is symetrical. I'm very happy with it. When I walked down to him and was waiting for another member of my party I had another 6 walk within 50 yards of me, he had a rack that wasn't very wide, but had tall tines. Pretty enat.

Just a point or two- First- The best photo here is the kid with his first deer -we need more kids to start hunting. Second- Guessing weight is tough without seeing the scale- shot an 8 once, told my bud it was small racked, he got to it first and shouted it was a large racked HUGE bodied buck. He was right , heaviest I ever shot and it had a nice rack, just looked different till you got to it cause of the very large body. Third- In most states if you shoot off all the productive does of course your future herd will suffer. Even if you limit the doe harvest thereafter the herd wont rebound very quickly. No does for about 3 years would fix it but then everyone would scream and cry. Landowners and clubs can help with " no doe hunting allowed " posters. Fourth- Here in Connecticut there is so much unhunted property the State is regularly giving extra tags to control the herd. With bow, rifle and muzzel you can get 10 regular tags plus 2 bonus. This "over kill" only works where there is much property unhunted and the deer can spread out quickly as you remove numbers. In States like PA or NY it would devastate the herd. I have a 60 acre permit in an area of about 1500 acres-the rest is off limits. What happens on the 60 means little to the entire area. I dont even think about shooting that many deer but thats whats offered. Last- Antler restrictions are nice but if you offer too big a doe harvest and loose a lot of buttons each year-why bother.
