I have used my ole trustee Rem 243 Model 788 for years. It's topped with a Redfield 10 x scope..Also use a Winchester Model 43 218 bee or a Winchester model 43 22 hornet.  I used the 22 hornet from the age of 12 up till I entered the military. Got my deer ewvery year with it and only one shot.. You just pick your shot.

Remington 700 CDL 30-06. Never trade that gun for anything. I have an 870 Express 20 ga, but the thing kicks like mule and I hate to shoot it.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.

Buddy of mine had a 44 Mag Super Blackhawk, man that thing was a handful with the stock grips.
He put pachmyers on it and it settled down a little...

RE: what rifle 2010/12/02 08:48:09 (permalink)
Spartansburg has out to 500 yards.  And on one calm day out there, I saw a guy with more experience and equipment and talent than any one I've ever seen shoot.  He was the extreme as far as preparation for accuracy!  I learned more about long range shooting from him in an hour than all the reading I had done.  His average group that day was about 3 inches at 500.  He was not completely happy with that, but that was what the gun he was working with was capable of right then.  He had 3000 into it.  He planned on a little more load developement and said the barrel was still a little to fresh. I know there are guns that can preform with unreal accuracy and there are scopes to match.  But they cost and are not as easy to set up as some think.  I don't know what the Zeis scope he had cost, but I know it is more than I can spend. I would love to see a 1" group at 500 yards...it would be fun.  I'll bring my quad for target retrieves.

Sparta's range is about a mile from my house as the crow flies...

I saw on another site where they set up on a bench on a mountain top and shoot across to the other side of the valley, I think they were shooting 600-700 yards..But not with of the rack equipment.

A vintage(1920's) Savage 99 in .300 Savage. I've been using this rifle for 38 years, bought it when I was 12 for $75, it has put a bunch of bone on the wall and only killed 1 doe. I will only use it until something better comes along!

I killed a doe on Monday with my 870 20 ga. What kind of loads are you shooting? When I go to practice I'll put between 15-20 rounds of Winchester super X slugs through it, 2 3/4 in, same thing I hunt with out of it. Admittedly, after about three days and 60 rounds I have a little bruise, but nothing too bad.

I know a guy who picks up his slug gun for a week a year and shoots great, I like to practice with the slug gun, the rifle, the pistols. I just don't feel confident picking up a gun I haven't shot in months and trying to hit a moving target.

With the rifled barrel I can shoot 3 inch groups at 50 yrds offhand, I never shot it off a bench to see what the gun would do at 50 and 100, but 3inch groups at 50 is good enough for me!

Is your's an 870 express? I may be mis-informed, but from what I understand, the express is alot lighter that the standard 870. It's great as a dove gun, but even shooting 3" turkey loads out of it can be painful after a few shots.

My HK PSG-1 sniper rifle with 8.5-25x50 Leupold was not even close to that in accuracy-glad I traded it for a Harley
I am happy if my assortment of varmint rifles holds a 2-3" pattern at 250 yards

Remington 700 in 7MM with 154 gr SST's, killed a doe at 300 yds with that gun. or my stevens 200 (virtually identical to the Savage 110) .308 with 150 gr SST's, or Savage 110 30-06 150 or 165 gr SST's... can cover each guns groups with a nickle at 100yds.
