I heard two far away shots around 6:30 yesterday morning. Something tells me someone was hunting with their headlights on.

I saw 3 does, harvested the biggest one, and had it skinned by 10am. Went out this morning, got soaked from head to toe by 8:30 am, then decided to spend the rest of the day working .

Did you see any suckers?

Shawn - did you see any deer ?

I was wondering the same. After seeing the sign around his stand there are no excuses.... unless, of course, we moved his stand one inch too much, or too little to one side.

Maybe we moved it two inches to right too much. Shawn -- you should follow that big rubline backwards into the hollow and up the next ridge. Bet ya that's where he's coming from. Or maybe he's dead now ?

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

The anti PGC guys like to ruin threads. They just can't stand the fact that guys are still succesfull. They don't want to read about people actually hunting and being happy after only see several deer in one day.

I'm with Ironhed. Start a new thread for whining & fighting...preferably on another website.

S-10,
Brown Hill...I am not posting names of individuals but, my uncles friend, hunting behind his house, saw 47 deer, 13 bucks, a couple were shooters, on the first day.  My uncle saw 20+ deer with at least 3 or 4 of them bucks but all the ones he saw were not legal.  He shot and did not recover a nice 10 point in archery season, same area. Shoulder blade hit most likely.  There were other nice bucks running around, too.

And if you hunt the 2F portion and get serious about getting off the beaten path with access....(hint, by boat), you can see a bunch of deer for sure.

Cambria county, lots more deer there this year than the last couple.  I saw a bunch more sign in the woods and had more sightings in my inlaws yard and in the surrounding woods this year.  But, guys hunting that same area (SGL surrounds my inlaws property) will swear there aren't any deer around there.  Several large SGL clear cuts in the area are getting to the "impossible to navigate due to thick sapling" stage.  Funny thing, walking these same clear cuts the first few years after they were cut, not one stump sprout or sapling of a "good" tree survived due to overbrowsing (other than the ones that were inaccessible deep into the tree tops that were laying down).  The saplings now taking over are definitely undesirable but they are thick and make great security cover.  I can go to 2B and see areas that are "loaded" with deer yet, there are tons of oak, cherry, and maple stump sprouts and saplings that don't get hardly touched.  Still tons of deer though.

The big woods just can't support the amount of deer some hunters want to or were used to seeing, plain and simple.

It was closer to TWO inches too far to one side, but look at the help I had to work with.

I saw 11 does, no antlers.  I also saw 9 gobblers.  That puts the gobblers to doe ratio at about 1.2 to 1, which should ideal for hunting deerkey next year.

The 4 -6 inch trees that were not touched when we were there are all tore up.  It seems that any bucks in the area wanted to wait until we were done with the condo before moving into the area.

There wasn't a shot within 1000 yards or more.  Talking to the guys at the camp, they all saw double digit does and a few saw bucks.  However, the bucks that they saw were those produced from the superior genetics in the area -- all had broken antlers to the point that none were legal.

PS - Good luck to everyone that hasn't scored yet.   This Sat. should be highly conducive to harvesting/seeing deer; snow on the ground, cold temps to keep the hunters moving around, deer getting bumped a lot.
I might head out to film if the wife is feeling better.

Nope, he's not dead yet.  The land owner saw him on Monday.  It was too thick for him to shoot through effectively.  Those are two reasons I didn't go into that area -- you basically can't shoot and the land owner likes to be there.  He said it went right where I told you it would (behind me), but i never saw it.  It could have crossed above in the laurel, but I can't see there due to the stand being off the earth's axis by .0013 degrees.

The guys from the camp that archery hunt said they saw 13 different bucks, including two massive 10's, that they were not able to harvest.  They saw them about 1500 yards out in front of my spot.  With Mother's Day opening on Saturday, there should be plently of people in that area to move them in my direction.

Hunted till 9 behind the house and had a flock of turkey land all around me. (where were they when I was hunting them!)
Went to another spot and saw two doe right off the bat. Passed on shooting one, way too far back in the thick for me.
Later around 4 had a button work his way, after 40 minutes, to 20 ft. of me.
He walked into the trail i was watching and shook himself off. Walked another 20 ft. to my right and layed down.
After 15 min. I got a cramp and had to move. He heard me and syood up looking at me. Another 5 mins. and I had enough and asked where his dad was. He actually was sleeping standing up.lol I talked to him for several mins. and it was too cool. Finally I stood up and said to him to go get his dad.
He wagged his tail and just walked down hill. An hr. later I heard a shot in the direction he took. Wish people would let the buttons go but I know its hard to tell sometimes.
Whent to the local bar to meet the wife after work and found out the shot two bucks behind the house.
A nice 12 point, I suspect the one I missed the last day of muzzleloader last yr. A 10 pt. then. Also an 8.
Had fun anyways, good hunting to all. John

Interesting, I hunted there this morning, must be they don't leave tracks. My son and his buddy took a boat in from Roper the first day and hunted different ridges. Total deer seen, 13 with one small but legal buck. I do agree there were years where you could always kill a good one by doing that and if you spend enough time squirrel hunting and scouting so you know which ridge they have followed the acorns to you can still have a decent chance.

Hunted 1B Crawford Co. Saw 14 doe, 1 big buck, and 1 turkey. Killed a doe on Tues. morning. Across the road from us 2 guys shot 2 nice 8's and saw a bunch more bucks. They saw 35 doe before noon. We heard LOTS of shooting on Mon. Buddy of mine hunted my land in Warren Co. he saw 11 doe and 1 bear. Another buddy hunted a farm that is by permission only(public). Their group saw 2 bucks and 15 doe.  Plenty of deer IF you go in the woods and NOT road hunt. One deer processor in Erie said he had 40 deer checked in before 11 on the first day!

I hunted Ohio 12-1-10 in the snow on Wedsday and saw 2 deer a 6 pt was running doe,in the last 9 years hunting Ohio I've only shot 3 deer and the 6 pt made 4.I've passed on a lot of deer when the sign of big deer have been there, but this year the big deer sign was not there and I shot a smaller deer that I may regret but it's to late now. My son and I have some doe tags but I don't think where going to use them this year.I shot this buck with a 20gauge Mossberg speical ported slug gun,and 3in.Fed.Barnes Exspander, all I can say is WOW. I center punch the heart and double lungs Wow, thats a slug.If any of you guys hunt with slug guns try that Barnes Exspander.I shot several deer with 11-87 12 g. and Rem. copper solids but I think that Barnes slug may be better.

Tuna,

You better check your GPS. If you didn't find massive bucks in every shooting lane. You could not possibly have been in the magical land of Ohio

Not every woods in Ohio has monsters, and the amish beat up the area I gun hunt in petty bad over the last 3 years.I wish I could hunt more areas in Ohio but getting permition is something else,I have bow only woods where I have a better chance at big deer and have seen 5 or 6 really big deer 130 -150 in the last 9 years. And to WF yes there was a hole through both lungs and the heart you might want to check the anatomy of a deer. That what the barnes exspander slug did.

I always enjoy hearing about successful hunters, but it would be nice if even more hunters were successful and had an equal opportunity for harvesting a deer. But ,it is a bit ironic that some who say the habitat can't support more deer, have no problem telling they are seeing a lot more deer than the PGC claims the habitat can support and at the same time they brag about how big the bucks are now that we have ARs.

Saw 16 doe the first day. Hunting in 2A. My son missed a large buck, said he was so nervous that he had trouble keeping the standing deer in his scope let alone in the cross hairs. Lots of shooting - by my count there here at least 53 different shooting events during the day.

Hunted 2A first day. Stayed on stand till about noon, saw one doe, a 4 point and a ten, that i shot with bow. Was hunting high on a ridge and about 25 ft up a tree, so could hear quite a ways. Only heard around 15-20 shots. Most way out in the distance from various directions. There were several other hunters on the property i was hunting on, and probably others i didnt see or know about. There were only 2 other shots on the property all morning, and only one deer harvested other than mine. All of the several hunters i spoke with later, hunting that property and others right up the road said their deer sightings were in single digits, most in the low single digits and two saw nothing.

Something noteworthy we've been seeing, on the few properties we hunt most, from sighting throughout archery season when we put in a lot of time, also during scouting & on trail cam pics, very few doe are being seen and the buck pics and sightings though not overly high, outnumber the doe at around 3 or 4 to 1!! Its been lopsided buck sighting over doe for a few years now, but even moreso this year.

I will be more than happy to post something bright and cheery when someone can document the positive aspects of the current DMP.As yet, no one including the PGC, can document how the plan has improved herd health, breeding rates, the breeding ecology or improved the rack sizes of 2.5+ buck. they won't even release the data they may have on the size of 2.5+ buck and that makes me wonder if they are hiding.

This past Saturday(12/4), me and a friend sat from daylight til dark.
59 antlerless sightings, 4 bucks.  We both harvested a doe.  Saw a 'yote but no shot.
2 buddies sat on the adjoining property and had 49 antlerless sightings(1 doe harvested) and saw 9 bucks.
I spent this afternoon, glassing, until dark and saw 18 antlerless and 1 legal buck.

Don't you know that Ironhed's magical deer property is exactly the same as every other property in PA?  We need to mow the does because the entire state is crawling with that many deer

RE: First Day 2010/12/07 10:55:32 (permalink)
First day morning (stand hunting): Some shooting but not a bunch, Makes them bigger for next year! seen nothing

First day moving (putting on drives): lost count! We had a great time and seen many doe and small buck, I missed a beauty! My 10 myr. old daughter couldn't get a spike in her scope to shoot it.

First Saturday (stand hunting): 1 doe

First Saturday (putting on drives) lost count again!  13 yr. old nephew first kill 1 buck (small 6 point and 1 doe), His dad,my brother 1 big Doe, My cousin 1 big Doe, our group could have killed over 40 Doe! My 10 year old daughter had a small doe 5 feet looking at her while we were pushing (wish it was a buck!)

This is the first year in many (9 or 10 years) that we've seen 7-10 doe running together. We were only seeing 2 or 3 in each herd but that has changed back to what it used to be. Wew are seeing no deer sitting and have to push them. If you sat in the woods around my place you woulod be disappointed and think no deer but as soon as you start pushing they are bouncing everywhere.

Our property and most of they land around us is "POSTED" and patrolled enough to keep the unwanted out. The good part about this is the doe herd is getting strong again, the buck are getting very nice racks. The downfall is no hunters moving the deer so you really have to work for them. I'm getting too fat for all this walking, I guess I'm gonna have to shape up for next year!

Good luck everyone theres plenty of snow up north which makes for great stalking the big ones. I will be out friday and saturday.

Not as great as you may think, I hunted yesterday in 12" which wasn't too bad but we got another 10" last night and 3 more this morning and it's just letting up enough for me to try again. I'am getting too old to track deer in that much snow. Sure is quiet though and the snow camo works well.
