A rare catch on Erie tribs.

I don't post much on this site but thought I'd throw this picture in just because Coho are hard to find these days on Erie tribs. Caught it this morning (11-20-2010).

Really cool , thats about as rare as catching the few stray humpies that turn up every now and then.

    Nice catch

Thanks Deetz. I've been Steelhead fishing for many years and probably don't need a full hand to count the number of Coho I've caught. Although this is the second one, in as many seasons, that I was fortunate enough to reel in. Maybe they're making a comeback!

dorrman , I hope not. They were destroying the perch and walleye fishery we have here. If Im correct they found that the coho were destructive and stopped stocking them in the early 80's maybe. They were feeding machines. Im sure someone can find the info on this. as to why.

I think you just have that kind of luck. Last coho I caught was off the south pier with my gramps throwing big black rooster tails around 1981-82. They sure did like to jump from what I remember of catching them.

I wasn't aware of the problems they were causing the perch and walleye. They jump and do, sort of, a "death roll." That's the way they've been for me anyway.

Nice catch, I haven't caught one in a few years.

Deetz,   not sure where you heard that, but it's wrong.   The last year coho were stocked by PA (who was the last to stock lake Erie) was 2003.   The reason sited for ending the coho return was poor return rate (which I'd disagree) and not getting enough bang for their buck because of the short time they spent in the streams before they died.

Thanks for clearing that up for me stillhead. last one I caught was the year stated. I thought they quit stocking them way before 03.

I agree when the Erie Steelhead program kicked in high gear the late 80's that was it for large Coho numbers . " Coho Fever " was dominate all through the 70's and mid 80's. Catching a Steelhead was actually rare. Huge numbers of Coho would stack up at Trout Run with shoulder to shoulder fishing. Also Browns were around along with some of the biggest Palomino Trout I've ever seen caught.............nice Coho man!

I have caught coho in the last 10 years.  I always looked forward to landing one each fall.  Not many, but they were a welcomed break in the steelhead.

Only the ones that I caught. All the coho I ever caught were exactly 12lbs, and they looked 20 in my pictures cause I held my arms stretched waaaayyy out for the picture. All the other coho ever caught in pa, by anyone else, were only 5lbers with an occasional 9lber that someone would claim was a 12. But they weren't. I am the only one that ever caught a 12lb coho in PA. All others were small dude.

On my first trip to Erie about ten years ago the first fish I caught was a Coho at the falls on Walnut, later that same season a friend caught a small King in the chutes.
Was on the SR in NY this week and caught a couple nicely colored Coho, along with a bunch of Steel.

    Good catch...

I saw one a couple years ago...it was small and near death.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

as long as there's habitat for reproduction, cohoes can run wild fairly well. many little tribs and basically trickles that don't even have names that i have witnessed healthy wild coho populations. they are a wonderful fish
