First Fly Protocol

This is for all you seasoned veterans of the bench (i.e., anyone who's been tying longer than me, and that's 30 minutes).

What do you do with your VERY first fly? Do you fish it and then ceremoniously retire it when you catch on it, or does it just get hooked into your hat, never to see the water, and you rely on its twins and triplets to do your catching for you?

Can't remember what ever happened to it - probably hangin off a tree limb some where.

My first was wedged in the rocks on the bottom of North Fork Creek. I'm sure high water carried it away many years ago.

I don't give a crap if anybody listens to me or not.

Mine were so ugly I wouldn't where them on my hat..

Although I did save the one I caught my first Steelie on, it was only semi-ugly..

Mine caught about 6-8 trout, then I took it to KPD one night and caught a musky fingerling on it, which tore it to shreds. Still have its tattered remains around here somewhere.

My father and I started tying at the same time. He saved his first few forays into tying. I'm not so forgiving on my flies, if they come off the vise and I don't like the way they look they either get recycled back to a hook with a razor right then or thrown into a pile to be recycled for hooks en-masse at a later date. Been that way since I started.

Don't remember my first fly. First couple steelhead flies were so ugly, ended up sticking them in Glen's box.

Loopy helped me tie a wooly bugger during my first tying class held at Lakes, Ponds and Streams on Rt 97.
I caught a steelhead on and it fell apart.
He then showed me how to tie his top secret fly called "cream sucker spawn".
I caught a fish with that fly and broke off.
My first fly I figured out how to tie on my own was a picket pin. Broke that one off, too.
Landing steelhead was a lot different then landing trout.

Saved my first one ever tied by myself. I believe it was a hairs ear nymph. Fairly simple but mine was quite ugly. Took it out got it wet and caught no fish. Lived in NY at the time and along the way in the move back to Erie It lost its way. Many have been tied since and a couple will never see the end of my line.

My first was a big white moth caught about 6 trout with it. Then lost it in a tree about 46 years ago. It stayed in that tree for about 12 years. Then I guess it rusted off. I don't/can't tie anymore. But most of my stuff looked like lint on a hook anyway.

Orange and white wollybugger was my first tied fly...Doc Bloom from the local TU chapter helped me tie it..late fall 1985. We then went right down to Walnut and I caught a steelie on it at what we used to call the tree hole, about where the stop sign hole is now. I don't know what happened to the fly, but the fish was killed and smoked. That was the start of the addiction.

Had a guy over last night, teaching him to tie buggers and stones. He was shocked by how much material I have. He said "you must have $1000's in material"...I told him don't worry, you will too after 25 years of tying.

Mine are horrendously misshapen so I saved them in a small display to remind myself that patience develops perseverance, and the result can be good! I never even tried to fish them.
