A couple of other thoughts.  Several people asked to pay for the shipping and/or supplies.  I do not want anything in return for the flies other than you telling me if you caught fish with them or not as the case may be.  That is it.  Please do not send anything back to the return address.  If you want to reach me, please send me an PM.

I also want to say, the flies are not professionally tied.  I am an amateur and at best an average fly tier.  Each fly is an original and tied by hand so it is not an exact copy.  Some are better than others, but I hope they all will catch fish.

The small dubbed single egg flies are my best hope for catching fish.  I spent some time looking at actual salmon eggs and tried to imitate them given the materials I had at hand.  I intentionally tied them loose so that the fibers might catch in the teeth of the steelies.  You may wish to work these flies around to form them into a more perfect ball  before you use them.

Bug,

I got them in the mail today, you did a great job! I am jealous of my dad (thats who gets them) WHEN not if these catch fish, I will make it a point to take the pic, and post it. Wonderful job and an incredibly generous gesture!

Thank you again,

Jacob

P.S. Thanks for giving the receipes for them, I am hoping that Santa brings me a vice and some supplies!

Yep, raining good in Harborcreek. I may be responsible, took the fishing gear out of the car, and put the golf clubs in last night, planning to play today.

The last 5 sets of flies will be dropped off today.  I am really sorry I could not get flies to everyone who requested them, but I had to set a limit.  I hope everyone will enjoy them and have good luck.

One person commented that they felt funny about accepting a gift from someone they did not know personally, but if you think about it we all do just that very thing everyday.  The person who plows the snow for us, the guy who stocks the food at the local store, the person who slows down to let you cross the street or the solider who is out protecting the country all are giving us a gift.  We benefit from the efforts of each other everyday, but we just don't see it.  Sure it is someone's job to do these things and they are rewarded with money for doing their job, yet more often than not people put a lot of themselves into what they do so that another person's life is little bit better.  So think about what you do everyday, not just the day to day grind, but how what you do can make someone's life better and realize your efforts are a gift for them; a person you may never know personally.  I believe when you do something nice for people the world is a better place.  Even the smallest effort can make a huge difference so don't underestimate the impact you have in the world.

This whole endeavor has been a true blessing for me.  May God Bless each of you as well +

On administrative note,  I have or will shortly delete all names and addresses from my PM box.  I am not keeping an records as to who I sent the flies to so for those who may be worried you sent your identifiable information to a stranger on the internet, please be assured it has not been given to anyone, even I don't have a copy.

Good luck folks when you come up to fish.

We will have to wait and see if the turkey gods will smile on me...  There were plenty of them around in early archery season, but they have seemed to disappear lately.  Oh well, I guess that is hunting...

Thanks Dave, the flies look great! I will enjoy myself using them and it will be even more fun fishing with them knowing they were tied with others in mind. Peace.

Sorry paul2ski, but I am all out.  Somewhere on this post is a picture of the flies and the recipes.  Since you tie I am sure you could tie up a few.

Good luck.

I am particularly interested in knowing if the little white fly (not the white sucker spawn) is catching fish.  I have a lot of hope for that fly, but need some feed back.  Thanks guys, now get out there and start catching fish...

Good luck when you come up.

Bug,
Caught fish on the sucker spawn and one on the steelhead pheasant tail.
Hooked up on the pink egg but my line snapped.
Thanks again!

Hey bug,

I am not sure how you tie those crystal eggs, but it looks like you're wrapping them like dubbing, I have messed around w/ a fly like this for awhile and found that if you tie the crystal flies the same way you would if you were tieing a glo bug, it works a lot better!! The other way seemed to make the flies a little to bulky and prone to falling apart... thoroughly tested them this season, one of my most productive flies

RE: Flies for free 2010/12/02 08:14:30 (permalink)
Paul,

The flies are just dubbing.  I make a small pretty tight dubbed center with a darker color dubbing and then add a few loose wraps of the ice dubbing.  I purposely left the last few wraps loose.  The thinking was the loose fibers would catch in the teeth of the fish.  I realize the flies are pretty fragile, but given the number I loose, I pretty much consider flies disposable.  I will do a little more experimenting maybe with a glo bug center and then a little flash veil.

Right now I am working on learning to make the moe eggs and egg clusters.  I have high hopes for them.  The first few batches have been a mix bag of nice looking flies and some well, not so nice looking ones.  I hope to fix up the not so nice ones with some antron veils.  Maybe the fish won't mind.

I would definitely think that the egg patterns are the way to go when it comes to steelies.  Think about what bait fisherman use.  Most use some type of egg; skein, egg sacks or single salmon eggs or minnows.  Of course, there are a few who use maggots or night crawlers, but the majority are using eggs and minnows so it makes sense that flies should imitate eggs and minnows.  The nymphs seem to work  sometimes, but I have no idea why.

Good luck when you come up.

fisherofmen376 thanks for the report.  Gald you had success.  White sucker spawn is usually a good choice.
