Lady Amherst

This is my first attempt at a classic salmon pattern. There's definitely some rough edges and some proportional issues, but overall, I'm pretty pleased with it for a first crack.

One I tried to tie. This was before I had JC nails, hence the hackle points behind the Amherst pheasent. Its not a perfect Lady A, but a good learning attempt on my part..

Cold: That fly is sweet. The tip and tag is perfect. Good job duud!

Nice ties guys!!  For me -  this style is a learning curve that never stops.  The book "Twenty Salmon Flies" by Michael Radencich is one that I go through alot. Even comes with a DVD. Good resource.

Cold, it really is a decent job, and I find that most of the time my first tie of anything is very important because it becomes the starting point and after which it gives me better idea what direction I need to move and corrections to make on thenext fly. With Classics, the quality of materials becomes the real challenge, don't stop now, lets see more

Yeah, I remember you telling me that same thing Bruce and I have come to realize that is so important with tying classics. It really does make a difference. This is the place to go:

I gotta get back into tying these this winter and dealing once again with the frustration.

Cold - don't know if you go to the Fly Tying Symposium in New Jersey (which is coming up in a few weeks) - but the last few years I've gotten some nice materials from a guy called Jens Pilgard who will be there again this year I believe. It can get a tad costly though.
