    Salt:

Beautiful bunch of fish, but I particularly like the coloring on that brown trout.  Nice to see more posts and great pictures.

Could that be a resident brown? Never saw colors like that on a lake run fish, the hint of red spots on the second half of the fish towards the tail.

could be a resident, but it is nearing early spawn season for the lake runners...

Looks too fat to be a res(in my eyes)---prob trans between lake and full spawn colors.

I'd say lake run brown. Caught him mid-upper river. Had a few others on up to 15 lbs.
Best days were the colder rainy days.

salt: I think I have that exact same rod for lake run fish. A 10 foot 7? I know they're the same make.

    Son of,

Yes it is the 10' 7 wt. It's the earlier 2 peice model with a slower speed blank. I like the softer/slower blanks for fishing the SR, better for roll casting and protecting tippets. On this river you rarely need to throw more than 50' feet of line. Great rod for fall run steel, even though last week landed a 27 lb. fresh King with it. Usually use a 9-wt. for Kings. Looking for a 12' switch/small spey, but that legnth is hard to find.

Old Salt: Yep, thats the same rod that I have for the great lakes tribs! I like mine a lot. Have one of the Old Battenkill Large Arbors on it, and no complaints with rod or reel. I have a couple switch rods, a 7/8 wt and a 4/5. I haven't fished with either enough to really say anything about them. Caught a few fish on each, but switch/spey casting is very new to me, so my opinion has no weight.

Nice pics man, glad to see them!

hey salt, check TFO... i just got a 12'3" 7 weight that casts great. slower action as well like you said. life tiime guarantee; no ifs ands or buts... as long as you send them the rod, they replace. i highly recomend it. i also have a 14'3 9 weight z axis sage that i just need to coat and set the handle and reel seat...

Leaf hatch will be done by the time your on the River. The last few weeks were still difficult as the hatch ran a bit late this year.

    Good Luck,

Hey Salt if you had to make a educational guess what would you consider the prime times for Browns in the SR? I know it varies year to year but trying to hit them right with my dad he's 70 and I would do anything to see him with a brown like that. He's used to the Battenkill over here, where we measure in inches not pounds. Thanks

    Mefishin,

Last Friday with the nasty weather was as good as it gets for steel. They were on big time if you were in the right spot and had the right colors.

    Lost count after 15

    ugly,

I'd say right now is good on the SR for Browns. The western tribs get real good 2nd- 3rd week of November. I've seen some huge Browns the last few weeks. Caught them in the slower water just off the seams and also in very fast water.

    They are there.
