Oct 28/29--shiner fiasco

After deer waiting all Thurs Am went out in PM for fishing. Picked up a doz. shiners and some blue sacs. Took the noodle and fished the shiners up river till they were all gone. No hits. Tried all different ways.
Put a blue sac on with 2 #7s about 3 feet up in swift water way above Tressel but below Ellis. Had fished my last 3 shiners in the same spot. On the second cast -WHAM-ended up in 2 1/2 hours 4 for 11 on steel and hos. Would have been a lifters dream. The whole time I was casting out there were fish coming and going around me in one foot of water. Also broke off 2 Kings- one was fouled. The other was just too much for the light rod to handle in that water.
Friday got a late start after the rain and went to the same spot. There were old kings on beds all around today in very low soft water. On the same drift  kept getting quick hits and the sacs were coming up torn open. Put on a bigger hook and quickly picked up a king. Must have been a new bed out there. Nothing happening with hos or steel.
Went to another spot (same general area) and watched hos and steel around some kings on a bed and started drifting  blue through the bed with no weight. Could watch the males quick hit the sac and spit it. Picked up a couple in the softer water then started casting (still no weight) out about 10 feet past the beds and swinging in behind it.  Went 1 for 3 on hos and steel. All Kings were the males and all were hooked just inside the snout-if you werent quick  you missed em.
Considering the time actually spent fishing it was the best I have had all year.

Be prepared for some real damp chilly days.  The rain
seems to come in about every night now at least for a little and it makes it seem much cooler in the AM. Tons of leaves in the water.
Good luck- fish seemed to be on the move upriver.

typical November weather for Pooolaski area.

probably won't see the sun again till December.

was wondering if the leaf hatch was done yet - should be very close to the end.
Flashy blues, whites & chartruse colors are in my arsenal.

Thanks Dime- Its been a while.  I had to sit myself down the other day and have a long talk with me  about my efforts to be a pure fly guy. There was a lot of yelling and screaming and yes-- some tears as well. But reality prevailed - I went back to eggs.

    Hey ssgt-
Good luck to all- steel seem to be on the move from what I saw up river, they should be all over the place. If they want to see any late kings though I think they are all on top ending their spawn.

i tried to get him up there in sept for the cohos but he couldnt make it i have told him about the great fight they give so i dont want him to hook onto a half dead king and say that it was no problem not much of a fight. like i said cant wait till he hooks a big steele and after a couple min and then it shakes free like most times

hey retired, i was fly only for over 20 years. just started using spinning rig again 2 years ago. i will say, i like the fly better for many reasons. i didn't start using spin rig because i wasn't catching fish; i actually went to oswego with someone and a spin rig was obviously the only option. it was my first time going to oswego in maybe 18 years... i caught some nice browns. the next year i went down a few times with bobbers and sacs/beads in the salmon. i did awesome. sometimes it is the ticket. but this past january and february i went fly only in the upper river and did awesome. but at the end of the day fishing is fishing. i don't buy in to the purist mentality even though i was fly only for so many years. and i never looked down on anyone who was spin/bait fishing. i think anyone who does carry that opinion is extremely shallow... but i will repeat myself and say; there is nothing like rolling out 50 ft. of line, throwing a mend, maybe even another mend and while watching your drag free pattern laid out on the water... an instant straighten of your line tip to then see a chrome head shaking ferociously... fish on...

Dime- agree , will still fish the fly rod with baits-I love it.
Maybee even in the early season with flies or in the LFZ as I have done from time to time for years.
I was unable to compete with it during the regular season ( OCT) however and had very little action. I lke a long drift and to be able to hold the line downstream for a bit before picking up- Almost impossible in the upper areas with the pressure. Always being cut in on and generally having to cut way back on distance in the good ( popular ) spots throughout. I was never more that 50/50 with flies to begin with and that stuff made it impractical for me to continue. Not blaming others here as a real fly guy would be able to adjust and prevail.

hey retired, try a high stick/dead drift by casting upstream followed by a series of mends to prevent your fly from dragging, works great...
