question about mounts

My dad has a 7 lbs bass he got mounted about 8 years ago that i recently took possession of while he is in the process of moving for safe keeping. While cleaning it up for him i noticed alot of tiny pits around the head and was wondering if anyone else has seen this or knows what could of caused it as ive never seen anything like it before. Tiny holes about as big around as a toothpic. Could it of been caused by flies?

There are a number of bugs/beetles that bore into wood and other items that leave holes like you describe. Powder post beetle comes to mind. Your best bet is to contact the taxidermist for his advice. I would wrap the fish in plastic to keep them inside until you get an answer. Most of the little critters are not something you want in your house.
