Snaggers run free

I took a rookie fishing the SR for 2 days. He was hooked up with a spinning rod and egg sacks. The second day he did hook up with a nice king. But he wanted to know why everyone  south of the town pool,  and at The sportsman hole were catching alot of fish. Just watch, lots of weight and lift. No many were hooked in the mouth. Sad to watch. But the town pool is joke. Some guys lefted their hooks naked. Also trash everywhere you looked.
Nov. going for Steelie with my boys. That is always fun.

I hear ya straw, funny things is, they patrol the fly zones just to bust guy's chops when the fish is foul hooked. Sometimes needed, but needed more at the Circus Holes.

i saw more guys fishing treble hooks, bare hooks and lures with trebles than i have seen in years, when i was up last week end

i always see guys ripping but it is getting worse

that is why i tend to walk away from the big holes it makes me too angry and i don't need to fight over a mudshark

I haven't been fishing the Salmon River for probably 20 years.  Came up Wednesday and I started seeing those "newfangled" centerpin rigs.  Funny thing is, no one seemed to be using a float.  Instead, they were using 4-6 big split shot, a big hook, and a barely visible "lure."  They were catching fish in the shallow water.  The crew above me was quite good at it, seeing as they were bringing their fish down into the pool to land them every 5-10 min.  I guess one big advantage is you don't get your line all twisted up with those.  I went into the village a while later, and that sight was even more common, with loads of people for a Wednesday in September.  A few people seemed to be swinging flies and drifting stuff, but I didn't see too many of them
    "catching" anything.

JoePa - I can't see what advantage a centerpin rig would be without a float. Unless they were using their long rods to smack a fish in the head with the weights from 13 or 15 feet away.. :)

drake, these rods were only about 10 ft. long I guess, but they had the reels.  It seemed the weights were pretty good at getting the hook down to fish level.  Maybe later this year I can see some used with floats to get a better idea of how they are supposed to be used.

maybe they were spey rods or switch rods
center pins are very hard to fish w/o a float

or maybe there is a trick to it i'm not aware of?

but, i've tried to and found it very frustrating
