I worked in the woods for years ( 70's through early 90's) and only picked up 2-3 dog ticks in all that time. The last 6-8 years I have picked up these Deer Ticks. Have they allways been here? How could I have spent every day in the woods walking and cruising timber and not picked any up years ago?

The other interesting thing is after all those meetings and claims in 2000/2001 that We had to thin the deer out in the urban areas because they were the cause of lyme disease being so prevelant the PGC now says they play NO role in the transmission cycle and reducing deer numbers probably won't reduce the number of ticks. In fact a 3 fold increase in the number of deer DID NOT increase the risk of lyme disease. I wonder if they fired the "experts" that said deer were the problem when they were selling Herd Reduction. NOT ----Could be right about them going underground in the summer. I picked up mine while moving a huge pile of rotting leaves and limbs that had accumliated over a decade. First two I have ever had embedded in my lifetime as far as I know.

S-10 trust me on that one..dogs are in the fields all summer and we only get them in spring and fall..tomorrow will be the day they come back out in great numbers..if you get one imbedded...put dawn dishwashing liquid on cotton and rub counter clockwise and it will come right out...wouldn't believe it until i saw it done couple times..remember counter clockwise..don't ask me why..but it works..probable all dish soaps will work..

Permanone, permanone, permanone. You can find it with the other bug sprays at wally world. Just spray your cheap long sleeve tee, waders and anything else you may wear that touches brush and let dry. Lasts weeks even through a wash or 2. I'm sure it causes cancer every pesticide that works well does but you bite your split shot so you won't mind.

For all you guys with hunting dogs, especially waterfowl retrievers, some advice from my vet. Use Frontline instead of Advantix. Advantix is not very resistant to water, and washes off easily. I always used it because it repels ticks, instead of just killing them like Frontline. But I learned the hard way last year when my black lab Hank got Lyme disease. I treated him on schedule, year round. We missed two of the best weeks of duck season while he was on the mend.

I must taste like a turd to the ticks... I have worked in the woods cutting logs for all most 37 years. Archery and rifle deer, small game, turkey, dove and woodchuck hunting for 38 years and have never to this day found a tick on me...Knock on wood..

270 - Hank - who is almost 5 - is doing just fine now, and actually was in pretty good shape by the first of the year. Think he was treated around the first of November. I'm pretty sure he picked it up in the early duck season in the South zone. I noticed a gradual decline in his mobility and interest in working with bumpers and just overall excitement. He'd run through a brick wall to retrieve anything I throw or shoot, but he had zero interest. Just moping around. I began to get suspicious because I had pulled several engorged ticks off of him a few weeks before he started getting lame, and three off of my own back that were imbedded but not engorged. My doc gave me that mega antibiotic just in case, and I was fine. The vet gave him antibiotics - which by the way were free through Giant Eagle's free prescription program - and it took him about 3 weeks before he showed much interest again. He's doing great now - vet didn't really say that there would be any long term effects. He's retrieved a couple of geese so far this year, and I can't wait for the south zone opener next week. Never tried the vaccine for him, and the vet was pretty up front that it wasn't a highly effective thing anyway. He just recommended that I switch to Frontline instead of Advantix. So far so good.

Bingsbaits & Mikastorm, I think that it is just a case of neither of you being in the right brush. I hunted fished and cruised timber for many years and like I said earlier only had two dog ticks one in Florida and one in Missouri. I also noticed some crawling on my pants in Cameron county one fall turkey season. Last few years I'd catch one here or there with two burrowed in(Deer Ticks). Then I was on a property down by Slippery Rock and look out. The fella I was with had 20+ and I had just a few. The place was crawling with them. There are very few in Venango & Clarion Counties at the present time. I believe they are moving in though. i

270, not sure if Giant Eagle is still doing their free antibiotic program that they were doing last fall. Basically, they had a bunch of very common antibiotics that were free with a prescription. So I took the prescription from my vet to Giant Eagle, which they filled for free. It was the same antibiotic that people get for Lyme disease.

I started hunting with my dad about 40 yrs ago. We would hunt hard and spend lots of hours in the woods especially with beagles hunting rabbits. Until a few years ago, with the exception of once spring turkey hunting, I never saw a tick. I spent time in the woods in VA, Illinois and eastern PA and they had ticks but never in Western PA. I started noticing the ticks here about 5 years ago. I now have a Brittany Spaniel and in some places it is unhuntable due to ticks. Two years ago I took her out at Armstrong Co and at one point I stopped her in the woods and pulled over 100 deer ticks off of her, just crawling on her. When we got home about 1-2 hr later, there were 30 imbedded in her neck. I use Frontline on her but they only eventually kill them. I can't understand what has happened that these creatures are so plentiful. Last year I was archery hunting and got in some brush and had several on me in a few minutes all deer ticks. Very disgusting.

Global warming. The climate change has allowed the ticks to move farther north. Bad news indeed. I do not enjoy hunting as much because of them. "I Hates Them"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
