We use our "Erie rigs" when we troll the Aly river.
Usually the Okuma 8' rods (I think the "Heartland" series) that you can get with the Okuma counter reel/rod combos...

Also, when we aren't worried about line distance (not needing a line counter) we use our Catfish rods...for bottom bouncers and such...

For us, the 8' or longer seem to work better...pain in the butt to transport since they are so long, but much easier fish handling...
I'd look at an 8' or 8'6" medium-heavy with a quicker tip action...

    Just my own preferences...

I was looking at the okuma was thinking about getting the set up for less than 60 bucks good deal was wounding if it would b overkill on the river. I stoped at dumans today and found a 8ft 6 in fiberglass med heavy eagle claw donwn rigger rod it has a very soft tip it was on sale for 15 bucks and I got 10 percent off how could I go wrong I give it a try

Ain't this the truth... I snapped my 6'6 St. Croix triumph (just 6 months out of the 5 year warranty) and my dad had a 6'6 Ugly Stick collecting dust so I snagged it and have been loving it since... But it doesn't beat the responsiveness of my triumph but still serves the purpose...
