I personally have had bad luck with Rio brand. Also think Seaguar is overrated especially at their prices! The brands I found best are Ashima, P-Line, Gamma, Airflow and recently been experimenting with the new Sufix Flouro which has been great so far.

    True...True

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Watch out for cheaper floros, not all created equal in the cold waters of Nov. and Dec. What would have been my best day on Elk turned into my worst as every hook up either snapped the cheaper triple fish floro I was using, or there was no knot integrity. Seaguar all the way for me now.

I have to agree with the majority here. Seagar is all I have used for last few years and with no complaints at all.

An incredible braided tippet material with an exceptional strength to diameter ratio that makes it the strongest tippet material on the market. With no stretch at all there is incredible sensitivity for bite detection and for instant hook ups.
    Four sizes:
5X: With no stretch and superior strength the 5X is an awesome nymphing material. It is especially great for Czech nymphing with its super sensitive bite detection.
4X: A general purpose size ideal for hoppers and other terrestrials, especially when fishing tight to the bank.
3X: Stiff enough to turn over bigger flies and superb for streamers.
2X: A great tippet material for swinging flies for large anadromous fish.
    • 5X (0.006", 0,152mm); 10lb (4.6kg)
    • 4X (0.007", 0,178mm); 15lb (6.8kg)
    • 3X (0.008", 0,203mm); 20lb (9.1kg)
    • 2X (0.009", 0,229mm); 25lb (11.4kg)

    20 yards per spool
    Color: Black
Extreme Tippet is very, very strong and has a slick coating that can result in the failure of standard fishing knots. To get the very best in performance from Extreme Tippet we recommend the use of a triple or quadruple surgeon's knot when joining together two pieces of Extreme Tippet (or if joining it to regular nylon). We also recommend the no-slip knot for attaching flies (an illustration is attached with each spool).
Warning: The ultra-thin diameter and very high tensile strength of Extreme Tippet makes it tough to break (and cut). Be careful if hooked to a snag that the fly or line does not fire back into your face when pulling for a break. Also, handle with care when tightening knots to avoid being cut by the material.

Do you guys use "regular line" for your tippet, or do you use specially designed tippet material? I used Stren flouro 8lb in a 300 yd spool and it works great, can't really notice a difference over some of the leaders and tippets i've used i the past and $10 fr 300 yards saved me some money. Don'e even need a tapered leader, just run it straight from the flyline loop.

I've been using Mean Green 4 lb. from line to fly but I've been losing too many fish.  been thinking of stepping it up to 8 lb. Mean Green. Maybe I'll consider the flouro.

I run staright mono from my fly loop. You don't really need a tapered leader for Erie steel. You are not casting that far and don't need to turn the fly over, like a dry.
I use Tectan, 9.2lb .078" diam on my noddle, and as leader material. This works well for me. This also elimnates the need to be constantly adding on tippet material.

I don't know why anyone would want to buy expensive tapered fly leaders and fly tippet material for Steelhead.  You don't need a tapered leader for Steelhead fishing in Erie.

I use an 8lb mono leader of Berkley Tilene XL Smooth Casting (and as a main line on my spinning setup), with a Berkley Vanish 6lb clear floro tippet on both my fly and spin setups.  This works excellent for me.
