Fishing with a rookie

I will be fishing with a rookie Tuesday and Wednesday on SR.
What will be the best way for him to fish? I use a fly rod. But I can set him up with few spinning rods, with 10 - 14 lbs. I just want him to get the Fever!
Thanks

    straw,

Be prepared to test your patience. I've brought inexperienced anglers to the SR, and what I have done is lent them the fly rod that they will be using a few weeks ahead of time to get accustomed to it and to practice roll casting. If you use a spinning rod, light to med/light 10-11 ft or more.

Spinning rod may be a good idea, depends if they have had any experience with either rod. When I first brought up my 10 year old son years ago, we started with a spinning rod but then switched to the fly rod. On a spinning rod your mono gets a lot of memory and starts coiling after a lot of casts, can be a real mess if the angler is inexperienced. And if your using all mono, you have to use more weight to cast.

If you have both, bring them, have him practice today if you can.

Most important thing, make sure your friend wears korkers or spikes and a wading belt. No need to wade out further than your ankles for a beginner though, but the korkers really help when you have a fish on.

It depends on common sense level/hand to eye coordination and natural ability. i'm not a guide but have introduced many friends and family to the salmon river. if they can't manage a fly rod well in regards to holding the line with opposite hand or not letting too much slack to avoid hang ups, the fly rod is really tough then... and if fishing water that requires true traditional methods; it's hard to learn a roll cast, s cast, or back hand cast overnight... i've grown very close to the bobber for beginners... you can control their depths and raise their success rate by setting them up with it... good luck

felt bottoms are ok this time of year
i break out the korkers once there is ice and snow

i would have him/her use what ever they are used to for a first trip
if they fly fish set them up, if spin, go that way

its all about comfort and getting hook ups for a newbie
    enjoy :)

Never wear felts only, maybe July /August wet wading.

Can't tell you how many times I've walked out to gelp an angler who was hooked up and could'nt move because he had no traction with felts.

The algae covered rocks are as slippery as ice.

    Be safe, wear spikes.

Don't let them throw too far upstream. Non stop retiefest and he won't get the fever and you won't get to fish. They all want to throw to far upriver.

Basically it depends on the water type and angler pressure..
I say a fly rod would be the easiest method for salmon & that seems to be how you fish so they would learn by watching.. A simple tension or roll cast with 30' of line is very manageable, much more the casting & retrieving a spinning rod..
As for the thrill of hitting the backing - you'll have to guide them on that part.. Sore knuckles suck !!

If the spinning rod is the only option, then take them to an area of nice long runs or tail-outs.. A Bobber works ..

Good luck and hope to see pic's of happy faces :)

Have fun & take your time wading. Those rocks can test your balance.

These fish are strong and take line like you would not believe; soon you are into your backing........make sure all your knots are tied properly!!!!

If you need flies go to Malinda's in Altmar, she's very knowledgeable about fly fishing the Salmon River and has a nice diverse section of flies.

The flies I am passionate about are glo bugs, egg head wooly buggers, caddis nymphs and stonefly nymphs....

I will be there from 10/1 - 10/5...heard there was a nice run of kings yesterday and this morning........FISH ON!!!!
