And there are many out there that will help a noob believe me(I'm still a noob to this game)..
Glen and Plum Bob gave me tackle and a lesson how to rig it, even gave me their hole..
Had a fella today give me some tackle I didn't have and said "give it a try"..(Thanks for the beads)
Had another fella today open up his fly box and show me his go to flies....(Tied up 6 tonight)
    Both complete strangers..

There are some good friendly dudes out there on the streams so don't be afraid to ask guys on the stream for a little help....

Once you get enough tackle to get started mabee hookup with a not-so-noob fisherman and spend a day watching and learning....

After the one fly picnic I'd be more that glad to fall in to; wait! Thats Wade down to the creek and toss some flies.
But that being said. for spinning gear: med light rod, good reel with a good drag, 6>8 pound test line, small jigs, lures, minnows, spawn sacks
for fly gear: 9 foot 7-8 wt rod, reel with a good drag, 7 or 8 wt DT floating line, some small shot, some small floats, and about a dozen flies, 2ea of brown buggers, olive buggers, single eggs in peach, sucker spawn in yellow, and soft hackle nymphs.

    WOW!

After reading post after post of BS on the site I find one like this where several guys jump right to the front to offer a hand to a "noob".

I knew there were good men on here. My hats off to you guys.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

There was a post earlier about how this could be a real good site. I'm usually a lurker sifting thru the bs and such and have learned quite a bit. Still not real good at it, but learning.

From what I have been reading lately, and even on some posts that are a real target to get slammed; I've seen a lot of great replys and some all around nice people. Thanks to all who post great info on here regularly. I'm one of those mupheres you folks have so graciously named us. I would love to meet some of you sometime. I probably already have as I am in Erie two to three time a month. Trip number two will be this weekend. 8)

I've never really seen a thread where guys from this board won't jump in to help a noob who asks pretty general questions about getting started.

Dunno why so many think this is such a hostile place. Sure there are some jagoffs, or dudes who act like jagoffs, from time to time. But for the most part, those who come here seeking information about gear, techniques, bait, etc will get a TON of very useful info.

When I started fishing for steel 6 or 7 years ago, this place cut down on my learning curve a ton. Still see the kind of good, solid info on here that I found back then. The BS may be a little wider and deeper now, but the good stuff is, and always has been, here for those who look for it and can have thick skin from time to time.

I'm open for PMs or if you want to offer publicly thats ok with me...Iknow I know...HIRE A GUIDE

Just let me start by saying - I'm a total noob with a fly rod...

Noodler - "I aint got no probs"...ha ha..I just want to make the next step...up?

I dont know wether my knots are wrong or what...probably the "man making the cast"...hell - I dont even know if I got that right...

Me & my bud had a clinic of idiots beside the house tonight...our "casting" was ok - but more than anything...we are afraid to be embarrased at the streams...you know..."when the pressure is on"...

We both watched last weekend as the fly rod guys caught fish (in envey)...we caught em too...but want to make "the next step"...dig?

Outfitted to the max...I think SLICK said - "dont make it harder than it is"...I agree

I know rsquared - I'm afraid of being "struck down" more than anything...

I am still a noob with a lot of this. Yes, I fished most of my life but fishing the big lake or going steelhead fishing is all new to me. I have learn a ton but have a ton to still learn. There are a lot of good guys on this site. I am going to the One Fly even though I have no plans on doing any fishing(Got in too late and not really any good with the fly rod right now). I going to meet some really good guys, help and just listen and take in everything. It will be a great learning experience for me and a chance to meet a lot of good people.

Hands down the best way to learn to cast is an open field, IMO.  Much less tangles and the like, then dealing with current.  Learn how to roll cast, that is about all you need in the Erie tribs.  Oh yeah, it is much more embarassing fishing on your lawn or a park, then any tangle on the stream!  Even the best still have bad casts or tangles when not paying attention.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBzJDEr3s6g&feature=channel

I'd probably hold off a bit, trying to double haul or anything into the lake until you are a bit more comfortable.  Other lakes, ponds or slower moving rivers will help you with your distance casting.  Trying to learn distance casting on moving water (including waves) is a challenge.  A good line mending basket helps.  Although, not being elbow to elbow with other anglers helps too...  You can have someone litterely on your elbow, and still be able to roll cast.  All you'll need for even the widest portions of Elk.

I have to add a word of encourabemant for all the noobs. I've been fly fishing for about 50 years now, and I still can't measure up to guys like FF Dave, or Bughawk, or DT, and quite a few others. I can get a fly into some really difficult spots though. Sort of like mastering a trick shot in golf. So I say enjoy your time on the water. Try to fish with folks who fish better than you. Watch and enjoy. The moment a fish takes your humble offering and you land it; then you will go from noob to novice and it's all uphill from there.
