Weekend Fishing

Went up for the 3 hour drive on Friday after work.
Went because of the tornado warning Thursday night and just wanted to check the trailer at camp.
(We had one touch down up there this summer only 1 mile up the road from Elk Access and tore the campground up a little)
Figured I would do a little fishing Friday Evening and Saturday Morning just to see how the creeks were looking.

My Report:
-Elk Creek still had a little too much color in them as of Friday EVE but good flow.
-Fish were up past the wood pile at the Access. Maybe up to Cascades.
-Lake was perfect for shore fishing and produced good.
-Camp was fine with a few branches laying around.
-Went out to Crooked Creek Lake Front instead of joining a few campground friends on a Walleye Trip Sat Morning.
-Maybe should of went for the Walleye??
-Caught Six at Crooked Lake Front with 10 or so hook-ups.
-Elk Creek was still colored as of leaving Sat Noon.
-Looked Like Rain coming in as I was leaving so creeks should rise again and sustain their color.
-One note for early season fishing- When it does not rain to a blow out level early in the season the color will stay up for a few days because of all of the silt it carries as a wash for the creek beds.
-With more rain washing the creeks down, the color will drop quicker as we get more rain.

Good luck to all this year..... If you see a maniac paddling past you in a Kayak when it is low and clear that's me..... Just try not to hook into me and pull me back in;-)

Nice report. What was the bait of choice at the lake shore? Spoons?

Just an observation, but the fish that I caught in the lake wednesday were way to close to throw spoons. They were riding the waves into literaly inchs of water... Bright sun and around noon I might add also.

Best bet is to get out early or in the evening...From the areas I fished today, the few hookups that did happen were in the morning. On a side note, the lower parking lot at the Elk access was JAM PACKED as well as trout run (laughed my @ss off when 2 duudes decided that they would jump in a little row boat and fish infront of everyone at the mouth)...but it was very suprising to see the number of people out this early in the year...not a ton of fish in either....just sayn.

fisher is right about the fish being in close. everyone gotta realize that wading out further just pushes the fish out to deeper water.

While I know this too is an ongoing debate, and it is not my intention to high jack this thread, I don't think the early season crowds this year are surprising with all the attention early season fish have been given on this board.  I guess I'm in the camp that believes there is some information that is better not shared here.  That information can be found in other ways; it just takes a little more work.  And that additional work serves to regulate the numbers of people somewhat.

    Just sayin'

Well I guess the rain kind of petered out as usual (Erie Weather at its best).
I was hoping they would get it and throw some more water in the creeks.
The guys are right about wading out too far though.
I have seen people wading out to the middle of the creek right past the rocks at the launch on the far side.
The truth is fish are under their feet and I have caught them 2 feet off the creek bed.
The Lake Front is usually good enough when you get to your knees.

Hopefully we will see some more rain for the next few weeks. The run usually depends on the rain so Get some dancing going and call on the rain gods.
If you remember the past 2 years fish in numbers have not been past the wood pile until late October.
Maybe this year Late September is a good sign.
    Just need the rain.

The whole idea of stocking the Erie tribs is to get people fishing and, more importantly, spending money in the Erie area......Anyone who complains about information on this board possibly leading to more fishermen, is flat out greedy or just doesn't get it.

Well, I've been called clueless before and will no doubt be called clueless again. And sometimes folks have no doubt been right--probably more often than I'd like to admit.  But I stated my opinion (which I think is different than whining, but heck, maybe I'm wrong about that too) and I'm sticking to it.  ;-)

Just sayin', or whinin', or however one wants to see it!

fishing was tough on elk today, more fisherman than fish i would think, did manage one hookup early early am, a few centerpin guys caught a few nice ones early too then it shut off, i would wait to make the trip up imo i made the trip twice already and was not satisfied. i will be up later next month though when more fish are in and u dont have the big crowd in one hole, felt good to have a steelbow on again though,

fished all night friday with really nothing to show, took a little nap till around 4. hit access around 4-- caught 0 in the stream, headed to the lake and had over 15 hook ups and we even hooked up with a double that was a run around event!!   moved up stream after the sun was baking the water, to see how far up. to our suprise they are farther than you think, hooked up in a well known place(corn) around 10 more times. moved over to godfrey just to fish a little more before heading home and found a guide service down there with a couple of people.  fished on the outskirts of everyone and hooked up with a couple of jacks--total around 5-6 hooked their.   all in all great trip over 30 hookups with 13 landed and also a 11.3 pounder to add to our board.  that was between 2 people.

Not at all surprising as the water was up for a good two days.
At least a few people came to the realization that steelhead have this urge to swim upstream as it was about 11AM when I started to run into a few anglers.

Good batch of fellas on Elk today..
    More fishermen than fish.
Did find a pod of about 20 fish, when my indicator hit the water it looked like a Chinese fire drill.
Pretty spooked after the weekend....At least I got a line wet and saw some fish...
And the big Skunk out of the way early.....

Went Tuesday and hooked up with one nice 6lber. Had to go to size 18.
That fish spooked the little group and that was it with the flies.
Met up with Donnie, dream catcher, and he had three on in 4 minutes.
Being the guide that he is, he let me toss a lure and bam, hooked no.2.
That was it. Fished till dark with nothing else biting. Very low and clear.
Fish are as spooky as a cat in a dog kennel. We need rain!
