Catch and Release or Catch and Keep

I am just curious on average how many fish do you keep a year. I am 100% catch and release unless something freaky happens and the fish dies which is not very often. Just wandering what you guys do

Andy

    mmm. %?

how bout a personal, general, decision... like
    =====================================
IF ITS bleeding/dieing and legal I keep it
IF ITS a walleye 15-20" I keep it
IF ITS a Pike 24"-33" I keep it
IF ITS a Catfish 15"-22" I keep it
IF ITS a panfish 7-11" I keep it
IF I'M completely out of fish, I start keeping fish
IF MY kids want to keep a legal catch, we do
IF I'M pretty sure it IS or real close to the STATE record fish, I keep it

That way, your catch decides what you keep...

    Why %???

that said... the only person that has a *&!* right to tell me what to keep (or offer opinions that I would obey) are the fishing buddies I fish with, my wife and the state.

Andy, just release them anyway. From what i've seen, as long as they swim out of your hand you have released it alive and you can say ,like everyone else ,that you let them all go. 95% of the guys I see, let them go if they are bleeding, held out of the water for 3 minutes for pics or dragged up on the rocks. Anyone who thinks ALL the fish he lets go [the 100% C&R guys]live ,is only dreaming and fooling himself.....WF

Legal Walleyes get a ride in the cooler, ditto with Perch and Crappie if they are over 10 inches, or if they swallow hook/bleeding. Usually one or two Steel get traded in at Poor Richards, rest are returned.

I dont keep Bass and not a fan of Bluegills/Pumpkinseeds so they are released as well. Only keep cats if there is gonna be a family fish fry. Pike are released and I've never hooked a Musky, but it too will be released. Pelletheads are quickly released as well though I dont target them

Depends on the species for me.

    Bass - released
    Muskies - released
    Pike - released
    Crappie - keep a few
    Bluegil - released
    Perch - keep
    Walleye - keep
    Steelhead - keep a few
trout - release mostly, kept a few
    salmon - keep a few

I think I've done my part, so I eat the ones that are tasty to me.

I toss all of the "top feeders" up into the weeds to rot and die.
Carp are released to live another day.

i only fish for fish i plan on eating walleye, crappie, bluegill, perch, and the occasional steely. so i do keep them. panfish i keep based on the panfish enhacement rules, bluegill 7inch and crappie 9 inch. i do not fish for bass, catfish, etc because i don't want to risk injuring the fish cause i am not going to eat it. just my opinion

REMEMBER HOW MUCH FUN YOUR FIRST BIG ONE WAS. TAKE A KID FISHING

It depends on who I am fishing with and if they want some fish.
It also depends on where ? The # rivers and their tribs, no walleye get eaten from there.

But I would say I'm a 99% C&R trout angler. The very few I keep are either going on the wall cause are trophy size or ones that would have died from being gut hook (early season powerbait on bottom) fish. These I don't worry too much about because they re-stock prior to opening day and it's only a few each year.
But on the streams I reguarly fish, I let them go.
It's about personal choice, every angler has the legal right to catch & keep their limit when they go fishing. Even if we don't agree with it, its still their choice and it not against the law.

99.9% Catch & Release.  Just enjoy getting out to fish.  Only kept one 25 lb King Salmon when fishing in Alaska a couple years ago.

99.9% freshwater C&R but I'm not opposed to eating a catch, especially panfish & walleye for a shore lunch.

    Saltwater, a different story.
