HOW HIGH IS TO HIGH?

We built a treestand in the yard for practice.I would say it's 12 to 15 feet high.I went an helped may brother in-law setup a camera sunday. He had a big game deluxe stand there it was 15 feet but when i got in it it didn't seem that high to me.I try to go pretty high when i hunt but i been doing some think about how the deer looked last year that walked under me.It seems if your 20 to 30 feet that you get some super sharp angles espically at close rang.I was thinking about if you could get hide out would 15 feet be enough? Some of my spots are flat ground which i think would work but others are on hill sides so i would probably say go to 20 to 30 feet at those spots.

I consider 15' to be the minimum and 20' the max on flat ground to have both a decent shot and not get spotted. I have setup as low as 10' in brushy areas but have been busted many times when below 15'. At 15' even if I get spotted I can usually freeze and keep from spooking them.

I get as high as I need to to be concealed well. For the most part this winds up being 18-20'. However, if I am hanging a stand on a ridge or above a swale overlooking their trail it may only be 12-15'. Sometimes the only trees available are bare and that is when I will get up to 25'+(although I don't like being that high).

It really depends on a lot of things for me. I am always willing to sacrifice a few shooting lanes in favor of more cover.

Keep in mind what part of the day you will be using the stand. Evening stands need to be higher due to the thermos dropping and reveling your scent. 20-25 feet work good for me.Steep angles are not the best killing shots for me. Gun is a different story. Go as high as you feel comfortable.

And do not climb/hunt without a harness.

No need to say anything else.

this is always a debate..height isnt as important as the right setup. if you need to be in "that tree" you need to get into that tree. weither its 10 foot or 25 foot. you cant be in any tree or in any spot where the deer arent coming. so if your tree only allows you to get 10 foot up, you get 10 foot up. if it alows you to get higher then go higher.

but to answer the question i guess how high is to high, i'd say its when you feel not comfortable up that high.

Nope not at all. In fact I do use a climber now and then and will take advantage of the occasional rock or blow down.
IMHO I think to much emphasis's is put on climbing trees to fool deer and not on the woodsmanship of getting close to your quarry at their level.

Want the ultimate rush get down to their level. The last buck I killed from a tree was in 93. The last 7 have been from the ground all less than 20 yds including this one at 8yds.

I have a 10 foot ladder stand, that I killed 26 deer out of(with a bow),and have shot several off the ground,I bought 3 foot exstentions for all my ladder stands,so now they are all 13 foot stands,I have great set up's where there are three growing close together, placing the stand on the middle tree give me great cover, also have a stand set on a large white pine that I did alot of pruning on and is a great hidding spot.I've been hunting out of some of the same trees for 26 years.

Depending on cover and if flat land makes up my mind but most of the time with a climber I want to be 25' at a min. Ladder and Lock ons I am between 15-25' depending on cover of the tree. I like to be high to give cover but also I like to be able to see the deer coming or deer moving out of range so I can move if my scouting information has now changed.
