Brown Trout

If i recall correctly this time last year weren't the yearling brown trout at the mouth of Walnut?  Haven't seen anything on it yet.  I know it was a controversial subject last year.

No, it is part of a co-operative effort between the PF&BC, and local clubs to establish a lake run/near shore Brown fishery. Projected numbers if I recall, of between 100,000-140,000 per year.

    Shut,

They are going to be more of a nearshore, summer catch for boat anglers. Also, in speaking to Chuck Murray they appear to feed quite heavily on Gobies. This combined with their tendency to frequent the same waters, could benefit the Smallmouth Bass population. I think they are going to be a great addition. Personally, I think we could/should significantly reduce Steelhead stocking, with, or without the addition of the Browns. However that would go over about as well as HR/AR has for the PGC.

The brown trout stocking is going to be concurrent with the number of coho no longer being stocked. The salmon had a tendency to run to tribs in other states and Canada. We were paying to send fish to other places, so that went by the wayside.

I for one would rather see more browns stocked even if it did mean a reduction in steelhead. Should I duck now?

Just curious, but does anyone know why the browns in Erie won't be running up the tributaries like they do in NY?  I mean I'm sure a few will enter the tribs, but it sounds like the majority will stay out in the lake.

Sandy Creek and several other Ontario tribs outside of Oak Orchards get large runs of big brown trout every year.  Someone else on this site last year was saying that the PFBC tried to stock browns in the Erie tribs before, but they just didn't return to spawn.  Is it because of the genetics of the browns being stalked or something?

More ARE being stocked, without a reduction in Steelhead stocking. This is being accomplished through co-operation with 3CU, and the Wessleyville(sp) Conservation Club.

Anyone that would like to learn more about the Steelhead, and Brown stocking prpgrams will have two excellent opportunities next mont. Chuck Murray ( PF&BC fisheries biologist for Erie ) will be speaking at both the PSA Big Run banguet on Oct. 2, 2010, and at the Adventuremen Steelhead seminar on saturday Oct. 9, 2010, at the South Hills Assembly church in Bethel park.

I'm pretty sure they follow the salmon up river to feast on one of their favorite things....eggs over easy! My feeling is that some will run the streams up to route five though also bringing a lot of the folk who head all the way to NY for them (and their eggs). The combination of PA brown stocking and NY license increase will make for even more company on the Erie tribs in the years to come.

    Slayer,

I'm not saying they won't run the streams, they will. In how big of numbers, is yet to be seen. My point was, that the intent was to create a near shore lake fisherie. The browns are bottom structure oriented, and will tend to remain close to shore during the summer. Rather than sprading out in the deeper waters, as the Steelhead do. One of the reasons for poor recruitment in the previous attempt, was believed to be a lack of food source in Pa's shoreline waters. The presence (abundance) of the Round Gobie, is hoped to be the difference. I also believe they are stocking a different strain, as well.

as mentioned, they were the Browns that were initially stocked that didn't head out to the lake.

i reckon there'll be some returning this season in the 2-4 pound class.
It won't be til next season when we start seeing full size mature Browns ..."IF" my understanding is correct

Please educate me.  What is the fascination with brown trout eggs?  I've been hearing that for years they are the most valued spawn, especially among pinners.  How did they reach legendary status?

Thanks to the folks who have a great grasp of the obvious.  What I meant was, what do you think is the big attraction.  Is it the size of the eggs?  Natural color?  Side by side, tied in the same size bags, cured the same, would brown trout eggs actually out-fish salmon eggs?  Or is it just a general mystique about them that has perpetuated over time?  I dunno.  I don't use spawn.  If you guys say there's no comparison, then can't argue with that.
