Carbon Express Piledrivers capped off with a Rage 2-Blade

I see no issues in shooting a 365gr arrow, I took some deer with my current bow and 370gr Gold Tips with no problems. I am up to around 405-410gr arrows with the Piledrivers now. I am sure I sacrificed some speed, but it really doesn't seem to be impacting my target shooting at all.

chicken-- shooting thru paper at one distance doesn't say much as all, if infact that was what you were doing. While getting a perfect hole at 5,10,20,30 ..etc.. is much better, its only saying that your set point and rest are tuned and says nothing about the rest of your bow. Also, try it with different arrows..it'll drive you nuts.

I do not like getting pre-made arrows from shops because most are straight fletched. Straight fletched will not fly nearly as good as offset or helical, especially with a broadhead. It is in essence the difference in flight of a knuckleball and a fast ball. Throw some wind into the equation and you got yourself a problem. Gotta get some spin on those arrows for a perfect flight. If you don't want to build your own, ask the shop to build them. Perfect arrow flight really is a major factor in max penetration.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

I shoot a PSE Bow Madness at #70. With Maxima 350's I'm shooting just over 302 fps. I've been shooting G5 tekans for the past couple of years, but may buy a pack of the T3's if any of the shops around me can get them back in stock soon.

I will be shooting a 10-point crossbow, 310 fps, with 2 blade rage broadheads. bow has a non-magnified 3 dot laser scope. I hope to actually shoot at something this year. I want to see what those rage broadheads will do.

SilverKype has put up some good facts here.I fletch my Blazers with a 2% offset. Ckicken I was wondering why you went with a 500 spine and not a 400? The 400 is more in line with your set-up as far as spine. Also the 500 is 8.1 gpi while the 400 is 9.0 gpi.

bowtech black ice set at i think 65 pounds think its shooting around 250-260fps, with a 75 grain head. i believe its around your weight 365? i never weighed it but i think the arrow cut at 29 was 302(easton xx75 2413's) but i think mines lil longer so maybe its around 380w/broadhead i dunno. i know my draw is around 30.

I think you are over analayzing your bow set up..lol it looks fine to me. just get it tuned to one set up..stop playing around!!!!!! start shooting!!

Yes I did get my new Maxxis and I like it a lot. Shooting the St Epic 400's, 100 gr tips, 26.5"shaft, 27.5 draw length at 67#. I went with the St Epic as they are a little lighter than the St Axis, 8.6 gpi vs 9.0 gpi. I was looking for a (middle of the road) set up as far as speed vs weight.I have to run through my chrony just out of curiosity.I don't think you are to far off spine and I'm sure your set up will be fine for hunting. If you are getting those groups as you mentioned, stick with what you got. Can I ask what shop you deal with?

I use Easton 2315's @ 28inches and a 100gr head. They are just a little over 500gr. Which is heavy but will knock the Sheet out of a deer. The other evening shooting had put a couple lumenok's on they look cool when you shoot well till you shoot and **** the light goes out and you have pieces of knock lying on the ground. There goes 10 bucks.

I really can't say outdoor because these guys are great.I just read to much and worry way to much about things. The one bow tech shoot my bow and was getting bullet holes at 20 yards.I shot it was getting light tears. If i got problems they take the time to try an get you straighing out.I'm not ****ing about the shop i just read to much and everything is saying 400 spines.I would scarifice 17 fps to go with a heavy arrow is it worth it?One more thing is all i would gain was momentum ke would stay the same.

    KE= 1/2 x M x V^2

Anyways, I am shooting Beeman ICS Hunter 340's (9.3 gpi)(look eerily familiar to the Cabelas arrows I bought several years ago) at 28.5" with 100 gr Magnus 2 blades at 70# out of a Martin Bonehunter (Cheetah). Have no idea what the speed is but it is quite a bit faster than my old Mathews FX set at the same poundage but shooting longer arrows.

Has anyone ever tried the NAP Quickspin or Twister quick fletches, the shrink wrap ones? I buggered up the fletch on several arrows when practicing with BH's and wanted a review on them. Ever want to see what shooting an arrow with crappy fletch will do, shoot a sliced blazer vane. Sounds like a rocket flying through the air and I lost about 8" at 30 yds due the extra wind resistance. Also, if you have a sloppy fletch job on your arrows, get an exacto knife and clean up the little gobs of glue. It will make a difference in your groups.

I understand and there are good shops in your area. Not saying they were wrong in selling you the 500's.I was just curious.Your tears could be from your grip and the torque you are giving the bow upon release.I used to shoot through paper time after time until I was consistently shooting bullet holes.Experiment you got nothing to loose. If you are getting groups at 30 yds, then don't worry about it. I know many guys that would like to shoot your size groups at 15 yds. Your setup sounds sounds fine. Ask 10 guys and you will get 10 different answers. Good luck and don't forget to practice from a tree stand. The closest shots are the toughest.

I'm not a fan of the shrink wrap fletches. They seem to work fine and are great when in a pinch but I would rather use the single vane, one thing is less weight. A clean neat fletch job with a 2% offset is hard to beat.Easy on the glue, you don't need much.

Well it all depends, speed helps out if you miss judge yardage. A heavier shaft I think is better for hunting. As I mentioned in an earlier post I choose to go middle of the road. The St Axis would of been a better hunting shaft but I also wanted to keep the speed up as well. Reason I went with St Epic. Most important is shot placement. Don't worry about your set up, you'll be fine. If you want to spend some $ go with the 400's. You can always sell the 500's. If you don't have a problem with guessing yardage, than I would go with a heavy shaft.

I had this discussion with my father in law who's taught physics for quite some time. He tells me momentum has more bearing penetration than KE. What he said made sense after he explained it. I don't feel like typing it all, but I did find this article which sums up what he said pretty well, and goes further into it....

    I am no physicist but...

An arrow will suffer in the penetration department if it is not flying true. An arrow wobbling in flight and impacting the target at an angle will lose momentum because the momentum is no longer all in the same direction.

Also, a softer spined arrow will loose momentum from deflection on impact. A stiffer shaft will "flex" less upon impacting, keeping the momentum in the desired direction.

We are now down to "splitting hairs", but my real point is that while KE and momentum are good indicators, however there is no substitute for a properly tuned bow with the right arrow.

I thought splitting hairs was what the thread was all about?  I'm stuck about 5 yrs ago in the trendy archery dept.  Just never had a reason to change when you have such a proven set-up.

Mathews LX (told ya I'm out of date)
65# draw (i like the lighter weight to allow more awkward drawing angles in the treestand and full-draw hold times)
Carbon Express CS300 (I don't think they make the 300 spine anymore), ~365 grains with insert.
    G5 Montec in 100 gr.

Once I run out of arrows and broadheads I plan to go all out and invest in the latest technology.  Will probably be next year if I fling more than 2 arrows through the woods.  Can't wait to drop $1200 in the latest and greatest.
