2010 Steelhead Fishing ==

As I have mentioned .. never fished for them before.. been reading as much as possible...

question ...

should I just forget about it if all I have is spinning gear ???

One of my favorite set-ups for the Clarion River when drifting with a float is my 10 foot fly-rod with an old Mitchell 300 reel on it... think it would work ??

there's no way I'm puttng out $200+ for a centrepin reel, let alone another rod...
and I can not master using a fly-rod as they were supposed to be used..

Maybe I should just not think about a steelhead trip in 2010???

Dr Trout.  Use what suits you best!  Then, if you feel the need to try something else just pm one of the regulars who fish up there and get together and try some different equipment.  I only wish I lived in Erie because I think I've got just about all different types of steelhead rigs.  When I started I used an old Berkley rod with a Shimano reel and my fly rig was a Shakespeare Presidential in 7 wt with an old South Bend automatic, and I landed a heck of a lot of steelhead, kings, coho, suckers, carp and bass with it.  DO NOT be ashamed of your gear.

Your ugly setup might turn out to be the best of both worlds up there. All you can do is give it a try. Basically, it's a noodle rod.

I love the fight on a long fly rod much better than a regular spinning rod, I like the way it bends and allows more flex when a bass or another larger fish starts to run the opposite way... and I find by using the longer rod I get less "snags"

Now I'm getting excited.. just the thought of hooking one of those steelies is a turn on... I can only image the fight that starts the minute the fish realizes it has been hooked !!!!

You have to be very careful with steelies.  Do Not hook the ones with the tiny Canadian flag on their tail , , , they'll take you across the lake in no time.

Dr.Trout  Just do it man. Take what you have and fish it.

Be observant if , I mean "When" you are around other fishermen and fisherwomen and they are hooking fish and your not, dont be afraid to ask questions cause for all those that tell you beat it there will be many that will help you out.

Make sure you respool with some good quality line and also make sure your reel drag is in good working order.
That rig is better than some of the surf rods I've seen up there..
Easier than driftin crawlers in the Clarion (smaller creeks)..
If your going low expense, bobbers and lake erie shiners....

Go grab a 9'-10'6" spin-rod, you can get a cheap one for around $40. Slap a reel on it with some 6lb test line, grab some size 14-16 egg hooks, some small floats and splitshots. For bait, start out using minnows, brown trout eggsacs, and Poor Richards single salmon eggs (the best).

Once you decide that you are into it, then you can start worrying about other techniques (i.e. jigging ect).

    Bings..

You mentioned smaller water... as I said before that is the part of my "tour" I still can't believe I was expecting some BIG water... and that's NOT what I saw...

I (for sure) want to make one trip later just to see the fish trying to jump the "gates" at Trout Run... that has to be amazing to see first-hand...

Before I got hooked fly fishin I used a fly rod with a spinng
reel and landed tons of fish with it. The only problem is the 1st eye is smaller on a fly rod than a spinning rod. Good luck

    Doc,

with a properly set drag....you can land fish with a 10ft noodle, or a 2 ft dora pole. In the early season...they will hit spinners, spoons, flies, minnows, nightcrawlers, nymphs, egg paterns jigs.....whatever. There is no wrong way/bad way to do get it done.

I like this piece of advice:

    THOUGHTS ?????

Forgive me another "back in the day".  All I ever used for coho and steelhead growing up was the same Garcia Mitchell 300 and six and a half foot medium rod that I used for Bass, Pike, Catfish, Bluegill, Striper, Flounder, Blues, Sandshark, Musky, White Bass...and the steelhead that I have mounted on my wall that I caught when I was 14.

Then I went and got all edu-ma-cated on how I should fish for steelhead.

Yes, I do pretty well now, I found some new tricks that I can change up when conditions so call for it.

But the best I have read is from slick:

ps...don't give any fish too much credit....they're fish. Don't over think it.

Just use what you got and enjoy. Your rigging will be more important anyhow. Spool up with a quality 8lb. mono, 4&6 lb flouro for leader, get yourself some nice blackbird micro swivels, some B & BB sz. splitshot, sz. 12 to 14 hooks (sabretooths are fine) I like Kamasans, various size floats (ravens, blackbirds, drennans or sheffields) and you will be all set. Is it worth it? You know what I told you before. Good luck!

    Just sayin'

Don't do it, you will be forced to take a second job to pay for gas money to get there and tackle to replace what gets destroyed.

    Doc Trout,

Those fish are just big dumb trout that lived most of their lives in the lake.  It's just trout fishing, and you're a doctor, so go for it.
