Carry on bag

Just curious as to what all I can and can't carry on, I have read tsa website but they put it all on the carrier it seems.  I'm just looking for personal experience I'd like to take atleast one rod tube, a few reels, fly boxes, waders and boots have a bag that will house them all and stay under the carryon size restriction...I'm flying united if thats any help

I travel with gear all the time. I've flown with rods and reels probably 70 times over the past 2 years, only issues have been the following:

getting back into the US with lines on reels- once from Brazil, once from Costa Rica. Both times had to either check reels or spool all of the line off of them and discard. Never had any issues within the US. Suggestion- always print a copy of the TSA rules on tackle and carry with you. Now, if you get the wrong TSA agent, probably won't make a difference, but it's worth a few seconds of your time anyway.

I've had trouble with long rod cases. My carry on's are both about 24" long and are multi piece 9' and 9'6" rods. My 3 piece, 9 footer was considered too long for carry-on with Delta. Southwest usually has fewer restrictions and hey usually treat your gear better if you have to check it.
For all my other gear i bought one of those compartment duffles and everything fits nicely inside it: Waders, boots, reels, vest, fly boxes; even my shorter rod cases if I lay them on top crossways.

Just got back from Alaska last week. Some of the guys carried on rods full length had no problems. I packed all my gear in the check in got there and back no problem. We were on Continental. What I have found depends on TSA person you go thru.
