Recommended hook for Estaz fly...

My father ties a ton of Estaz flies before we go to the river each season. He recently ran out of hooks. He was using Gamakatsu Live Bait hooks. They are really thick with a rather short shank. Not sure if this was the best choice. What are some good hooks that I can buy him to tie the Estaz fly that will hold up to those strong salmon on the river? Looking to order some hooks online, so fire off some websites at me. Oh, and please specify the best size hook to buy.

Thanks guys!!

diachii x point model 510 size 8 or ten these aren't cheap hooks and maybe cheaper by the thousand maybe a shoip can order them for you. these are a scud looking hook and can also be used when tying tube flys for swinging tube flys.

I didn't say these are the ten suggestions

+1  X- Points are a great choice IMO. Very sharp, quite strong.

any scud style hook will work just spend the $ and buy good hooks they pay off in the long run.  looks for hooks that are 2X Heavy,    i use timco 2457  style hooks. for all my  egg stuff sizes 10 - 14.

It has been some time since I have tied any egg flies but that is the hook I liked. Tiemco hooks rock. Look on the net year round and stock up when you catch a good price.

IMO- No reason to break the bank . Try the Mustad 3366 50 hooks for 2.69 .... Save you're money for gas & lunch at Theresa's Deli . Haven't lost too many fish and at that price my boxes will be full

For salmon river I use the cheap longer shank up eye  mustad 36890 size 6 and I tie them short.
for erie, any scud hook and some on 3906 nymph hooks.
It all depends on what length you want them.

Mustad 9174 live bait hooks. size 10. After my first salmon trip when most of my egg flies ended up with bent or straightened hooks I switched to these and haven't had a problem since.

Cheap, adequate, Eagle claw L42, size 10 or 12. Better, more expensive, but a great egg pattern hook, Daiichi 1650 size 8 or 10.

I used estaz flies last week on those SR kings and cohos that where tied up on XPoints.
    Very strong, very sharp.
Hard on the wallet, though as I lost a ton of hardware to the fish and stream bottom.
Also, used some short shanked Owner Hook that had an offset bend (can't remember the model #). These were strong and pointy, too.
