Smells

I read an article in the autumn 2010 edition of Fly Tyer magazine by David Klausmeyer regarding a fish's sence of smell. He raises the point of scents on your flys from the various materials used to even your hands. He also raises the question of adding attractant scents to a fly. I've never had a need to either mask any scent or add any scent. Bass fisherman use them all the time. What do you think?

I can give you a tip - if you smoke use something to get the smell off of your hands before handling your flies. It will help a lot.

    Same with pumping gas enroute.

I believe the true benefit of most "attractants", is simply that they mask "un-natural" smells.

good point. fish do have an incredible sense of smell. think about it - it's how salmon & steelhead find their way back to their "home" streams after years either at sea or in the Great Lakes. pretty remarkable.

I have noticed that when I use side chew while fishing with jigs, the longer I fish, the less frequent the hits seem to come.I think it's because every time I put in a fresh chew I get more tobacco residue on my hands & on my jigs, because I change jigs frequently. When I notice this,I like to "wash" my hands with water & mud from where-ever I am fishing. That is why I am amazed that anyone catches Steelhead using maggots that they sell in snuff containers. sam
