Article on Panther Hollow Lake restoration/clean up

It looks like an effort is going to be made to clean up this lake located in Pittsburgh. Can any of the old timers on this board speak of a time when this lake was actually fishable? For those of us who live in the city, it would be nice to have a lake to stop by and scratch the itch.

I know where that lake is. I actually helped clean up the shore line with the Boy Scouts when I was a young boy. That was in the early 80's and it was dirty back then. I do remember carp in there but not much more than that about it. It is less than 15 minutes from my house. I don't think they could ever keep it clean with all the slobs in the city.

I heard the trout that can't survive in the Yough tailrace were going to be moved there and tagged with parking tokens. I don't know if this is true.

Caught cats (bullhead) in there as a kid (70's), but it was far from "clean". The current effort has more to do with getting stormwater out of the sewers (the entire lake outfall goes to ALCOSAN). It worked at Nine Mile Run.
If you are DYING to scratch your itch, the ponds in Highland Park have about 6 bass in them, along with bullhead and carp.

I fished there a couple times around 2000. Carp are all Ive ever caught. I was fishing with a girlfriend once and something pulled her rod straight in, never got it back.

"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."

I went to school at CMU, so that pond was my backyard and my fly rod testing ground. I spend many hours down there just casting.

There are some fish. In the times that I was looking for fish, I caught bass up to 12" or so, crappie to 8", and some shad looking things up to about 10". It was enough to scratch an itch. There are also carp in there. I don't know how many, but some are considerable in size. Walk across the bridge near Phipps on a sunny day and look down. You'll count a dozen that will all be 30" plus. I never targetted them though as I always had a fly rod.

    Thanks

Wild John, you can't fish for the carp in Highland Park.
