Yough Trout....Dead.

Just read in yesterday's Valley Independent that 1200 Trout died in the cages at the Yough Dam.  The Trout are the ones raised by Chestnut Ridge TU.  Apparently something went wrong with the aerator ?  I didn't think those fish needed to be aerated.

you guys are too funny...but on a serious note why do they need o2 pumped into the cages...my camp is 1000 yards from this and to me it looks like a fecne in the water so why would the youghs water need o2 expecially right by a discharge...im confused? (but people claim i am often)

because the water being pumped out is from the mid/lower level of the lake with little dissolved O2

correct, it is a bottom release from the dam and their is no spillway, it is an underwater discharge. All of this leads to low levels of disolved O2 right at the outlet area. Once the water gets moving, it picks up plenty of oxygen.

"A Homewood man led police on an hourlong car chase that ended with a crash injuring three officers.

"The car was driving itself," Wright said. "The car has a GPS. It's a Lincoln Navigator. They drive themselves. I wasn't running nowhere."

I understand what you folks are saying about the O2 levels coming from the deep discharge, but I guess I still am not fully understanding.  That "backwater" is loaded with free-swimming Trout.  Are y'all saying those fish have to head downriver for some needed O2 periodically ?  Strange.
