nobodys hooked up yet?

hard to believe there hasnt been one plucked out of the river yet, would be there right now but got a golf tournament today, would have thought that bump of water last couple of days would send a few screaming up.

I won't be there for three weeks, but reports from SalmonCrazy indicate a few have run the river. With the heat coming and the water running at 185 cfs until next weekend any fish in the river will be poached!

i was up when the water was over 2000 cfs and watched it drop. i saw atleast 100 to 200 fish in the estuary. i finally saw about ten fish running through shallow flats once the water was down to 500 the next day. my rule of thumb is for every one you see, there are atleast 3-10 that you don't see. i had 4 oppurtunities to cast to fish and had no success. my father has been up the past 2 days. he hooked 2 this morning and and yesterday morning. despite the warm temps, fish will enter daily at this point and as long as they dont stress and try to run the river, they will survive. there is plenty of oxygenated shaded little spots or spring holes to keep them alive if they find it.

I always get a kick out of the early Sept reports. They would make a newcomer actually think there are a lot of fish in the river. Lots of hope and excitement for what is to come and a lot of "somebody said they saw". Have patience they will be here.

You need to read sites like G. O'Brians guide site if you want to get your blood pumping Retired (you lucky #%%$!^)! Wish I was at retirement now. Anyway this is like Christmas for us, just waiting for the gifts to come in.

Hey in regard to early reports--
A number of years ago during the Summer I read a report about so many Skamania in the river "even the kids are catching them". I immediately took off a day or two and drove 300 miles to get there. When I got to the shop listing the report and asked about all the Skamania they looked at me like I was the one who was nuts.
I checked in with another shop or two and turned around and drove right back to Connecticut the same day--never wet a line.
Reports are nice but the grains of salt sometimes have to be HUGE.

    Hey Coho,
I read that report and saw the photos . I believe it. Those who know the river well and how to fish it -especially early AM by the mouth this time of year- can do OK.
The rub however is for the new folks, like that guy looking for info for his first trip, who read these reports and think that now is the time for them.
This is NOT like waiting for  Christmas---this is better.

Yeah your right this is better. I also had some of those " haul butt they are a running trips" go belly up. Thats why I keep a log for every year and rely on conditions and trends instead of posts. But it also pays too know who is reporting also.

ask george obrien about aug. 23 1998. myself and two friends shared the entire DSR with him and his two daughters along with somewhere around 10,000 salmon. biggest run i've ever seen. the joss hole had a steady wake going upstream against the current. ask him and he'll tell you...

sound advice in regards to reports...be the one who makes the reports... reports only hold true for that specific moment and spot in which the person is reporting on. being persistent and finding things out myself has always worked the best for me. and most of the time no one even believes me... lol...

A number of years ago a friend and I fished the DSR Sept 24,25,and 26. We were there all day each day except for lunch and perhaps only till about 2pm the third day. Nothing happened. We each perhaps hooked one fish and actually saw more splash out at sunrise than we saw enter each day. It was unusually poor for that time period. Nobodys fault-thats fishing.
A few days after getting back to CT. a local fishing magazine reported a "FANTASTIC" run of Salmon into the river on the 25th and went on to say that they were now in the river and now was the time to go up.--- BOVINE FIELD SPLATTER.
I never bought that mag. again and have learned to go fishing when I feel like it and not when THEY say its good.
