Finally! A Yough hawg.

I finally landed one of the elusive big Yough smallies.

Went for a short float with my niece the other day.  She had never fished a river and is just getting into fishing, so we floated Cedar Creek to West Newton.  The water temp seems to have dropped a bit from the cold nights and rain, although it is still very low.  For the first hour it was just dinks.  They were so small they would only take the tail of a tube and never get to the hook.  After a dealing with that for awhile, I figured I would throw on a real small blue fox spinner.  I might as well land dinks if that's all that's hitting, right?

About 20 minutes later I cast towards shore right above a rock shelf in about 12" of water when this hawg comes out and sends my drag smoking as it takes off up river.  A very fat, healthy 17" smallie.  Awesome to land on an ultralight setup.  My only regret...no camera on this trip.  We got to the outfitters where I realized the battery was dead and left it in the truck

I guess the big ones really do exist in the Yough.  Now I have to find a 20 incher

When you get a few 20's then hawg might be appropriate term. The big boys don't hangout with the little boys.

Compared to the 12" runts that are usually found here on the Yough between the trash, tires and old shopping carts...yeah, this was a hawg.

Thanks guys.  I'm waiting for the chance to land something real big....which seems pretty rare on the Yough for a weekend warrior.

If smallies were the size of muskies i would be afraid to dip a line in the watter unless i had a pair of watter ski's on lol.
