Upcoming Events Impact Boaters Allegheny River

Upcoming Events Impact Boaters

Don’t shoot the messenger, but BoatPittsburgh.com has some news that will have an impact on local boaters in the upcoming weeks.

   * All boaters using the Allegheny River should be aware that Lock 2 will be closed to all river traffic from September 13, 2010 to September 27, 2010.
The single 56’ x 360’ chamber will be closed due to repairs to the lock gates and upper miter sill.
Normal wear and deterioration have made it necessary to schedule this work.
Locks and Dam 2 is located across from Sharpsburg, Aspinwall and Etna, downstream from the Highland Park Bridge.

* A retired Navy ship will be visiting Pittsburgh from September 1 through September 7.

The 327’ USS LST-325 will be docked at the North Shore Riverfront Park and tours of the historic ship will be available during its stay.
Although this is a great opportunity to see a part of history, some boaters may be disappointed that this visitation coincides with the Steelers final preseason game versus the Carolina Panthers on September 2, 2010.
If you plan on attending this game by boat please be aware that dockage at Heinz Field will be limited due to the USS LST-325’s visit.
