The runs start to get thick in about the middle of September. There is a really good hatch of neoprene and PBR that goes on at night about then and that typically signals the first good run of fish. This hatch will get progressively earlier in the day as the season wears on.....

It usually requires a good 3-4 day cold rain (to get enough water in the tribs to allow the fish to move and to let them live once in the streams) sporadic mini runs may occur from about the middle of Sept on with some (very few) fish coming in at night earlier and then moving back out to colder water when the sun comes up. So your best bet AS HAS BEEN REPEATED ABOUT 5 TIMES ALREADY THIS YEAR is to wait till mid Sept and then watch the weather and check the reports pages. The fish run from late Sept till Jan. There will be some there don't worry about being first.

Just figure on October. Watch the weather and the reports. As far as flies check out this thread:http://forums.fishusa.com/Steelie_Starter_Fly_Kit/m_330424/tm.htm

    And quoting from Deetz:

My favorites are buggers in black , olive and brown sizes 8 - 14
                          sucker spawn in pink , orange , cream , peach , and pale yellow 12 - 18
estaz egg  in orange , white , peach , chart. , and two tone orange and white sizes 12 - 16
And a good assortment of other bugs like nymphs and stone flys sizes 10 - 16

have fun tying and good luck. only 8 - 10 weeks away from the madness.

wait until we get some good rain and the flow gauge at walnut is up, then to people will post( no fish in the creeks, havent saw any yet.) thats when i go and usually the bottom end of the creeks are loaded. most guys on here wont say if they are there yet. by the 3rd week in sept. if we get some rain to bring up the flow gauge, just go. the fish will be there. i learned that and been doing it for bout 8 years and every 1st trip been right on.

If you wait until October to fish for steelhead in PA, then you are missing out on alot of good fishing, IMO. There are always alot of fish in the lower ends by mid/late September, regardless of water levels.

You got that right. For any and all "newbies" reading this thread, there are ALWAYS fish in the lower tribs by late sept, every friggin year, in and out. If someone posts and says the mouth is closed, no fish, etc. it's a defensive strategy on their part. Last year in early-mid Oct tons of guys were claiming the steel hadn't even made it past rt5 on Elk. Truth is by then they were all the way south of rt 20 to the flats, and actually had better numbers from Girard upstream, than the lower end of the creek. Their defensive strategy obviously worked well, as lower elk was packed with guys and a few fish holding in the holes, surrounded by fishermen on all sides. A quick drive to the Legion hole showed a fraction of the guys and a pile of fish and everyone hooking up all around. A heavy concentration of fish had moved in weeks earlier and ran that far up on one good soaker. The defensive strategists kept a tight lip on that info as long as they could. Moral of the story-don't be afraid to travel. You can always find fish somewhere by late sept, and often they are further up than you think. It only takes one good rain event to send a run of a few hundred fish several miles upstream. Also not a bad idea at all to start further up than you think the fish might be and work your way down till you find 'em. That's the opposite of how most guys do it. Hope you newb's have a blast, catch lots of fish, and aren't turned off by all the negativity and the greedy guys that are afraid to point anyone toward some fish. Lifes' short. We should all be doing more fishing and good deeds for others, than excercising our greed, deception, and a false sense of entitlement. Tight lines.
