Lost Downrigger Club

Shutup, your not the only one! When I read your story, I thought "how can you lose a rigger." I lost a downrigger overboard 2 Fridays ago. Can't blame anyone but me, because I hooked them up. We were almost to the 2nd. trench and my buddy say's "where is your port downrigger?" I said "Whaaaaaaat!" I thought I was in the Twilight zone. I can't believe that it came loose. It would have had to slid backwards to come off the mount. that would leave about 4ins. to inside of boat. Rigger motor is on the inboard side, so you would think with the weight of the motor it would have dopped into the boat. I had already made up thin cables to secure them to the boat after I heard of your loss, but didn't bother to hook them up. Real stupid. I replaced the digitrol with a mag10 and back in business. There is a Cannon Digitrol on the bottom somewhere between Presque Isle and the second trench. (they are now secured with cables)

First time out with my buddies new big john down riggers, we decided to take them off so they were out of the way and I didn't realize the rigger was two pieces and the nice new rod holders went over the side... I still feel horrible. PS if anyone pulls up a big john rod holder out of lake around Northeast I know the owner ;)

I have dropped two radios and more pairs of pliers down ice fishing holes then I can count. I started tying strings around everything when I am on the water.

There is alot of stuff on the bottom of that lake Rob. I have lost a rod, pliers, rod holder, an anchor my buddy threw over without tying the rope on. There are probably more that I can't think of now.

Don't feel bad Roberto...word on the street is that boat owner is a real pain in the **** anyway ...besides, consider it the first piece of the new reef. I'm hopping in the boat in 2 minutes....

Good Luck out there Bogey, wish I was fishing instead of filling out paperwork to work in Corry SD but gotta make the money to support my fishing and hunting habits. Try not to add anything to that new reef out there.Oh yeah and you are a pain in the ears sometimes when you start your singing along with the radio...

A few years back one of BloodyHand's riggers went over as we were letting it down....stoopidly, I grabbed it by the cable...OUCH! Saved the rigger though.

Slick, you are the kind of first mate to have. Risk a finger for a downrigger. I like it! Sounds like alot of lost overboard stories out there.

I have only lost a stainless steel shot cup overboard. Cant for the life of me figure out how it happened.

SS lessons learned I guess. Ive still not set up a safety device for my trolling rods. I better do it or I will be learning the hard way.

    Hey Split Shot

When and where did your buddy give your anchor the toss?  I just pulled a nice anchor out of the bay last week that was not cut off but rather tossed over or fell off a boat without being tied off.  If you identify location and other facts I would be glad to return to rightful owner.

    Hey Smokey,
You didn't happen to find that in horseshoe pond did you ? Right at the entrance in 5-8' FOW ? I stipidy threw mine overboard without the safety chain on it, so no rope was attached. It was a rust brown mushroom. The clasp broke on me

    Sorry 58 FASTWIN,

Not a mushroom, it's a Danforth.  Funny thing is I told a few guys from work about my catch and it seems like 1 in 4 have lost an anchor one way or the other!

There arn't too many that have boated for awhile, that didn't loose something overboard or forgot to put a plug in. I know I have done everything you can think of.

Don't worry, I could join the club and be V.P. of lake donations! I can loose an $18.00 set up of dipsey / worm harness because I bang the darn thing off the bottom of the lake and not blink an eye, but if gas goes up 5 cents I am ready to go scream, although I do scream at myself when I do stupid stuff like that! Amazing how you don't mind throwing cash at something you love. We will see if anyone gets reunited with their anchor.

I lost my boat one time lol. When i was launching by myself onetime i unhooked my winch strap on the front of my boat but let the safety chain on and slowly backed the boat into the water. once i get it in the water i jump on the boat from the dock and unhook the chain and drive my boat off so i can park the truck. Well this time the chain pulled right off my trailer!!!! its a brand new boat and trailer lol, heavy chain too. well by the time i flew out of the truck once i figured out what happend my boat was to far away! thankfully a fellow boater was coming in and got my boat to the dock for me and asked why my safety chain was still on the front of my boat lol. Well needless to say that night i fixed it all up so that would not happen again, it was kind of a crappy setup how they had chain mounted. well at leat there way a happy ending to this story lol.
