I bought a 20lb leader from Orvis in 7-1/2 foot length.....From that, I'll experiment with tippet from 10lb to 20 lb.....For an indicator, I'll use a large size thingamabobber brand.

Leader/tippet below bobber should be 1 1/2 times the depth of the water you're fishing. 10# tippet is plenty for anything up there- even a good sized rock.

I like to use 12# flourocarbon tippet for the mud sharks with a straigt 8' length of 17# maxima. Strike indie is a thingamabobber placed at twice the depth of the water I'm fishing ............

I go with 9 foot 2x tapered leader and 3x tippet. I try to stay away from anything more than 10 lb. I'd rather my tippet break than my rod. Those fish are strong, and I only use a 7 wt. I still manage to land a fair amount of fish.

yes you can. be sure to put sufficient backing on the reeel first. also, don't let any slack form in your line while using this, or you will get snagged up a bunch. i recomend a three or four weight forward over amnesia. you can get a better presentation while still getting down a little faster with the lighter weight fly line line. i've only used amnesia as my butt line attached to the fly line for the first foot. then about 4-5 ft. of straight 15 or 25 tapered down to 15. than 8 to 12 lb. leader good luck

    Chartist,

I use a 9ft. 9wt. and have never had any problems, my buddy uses an 9ft. 8wt and also no problems.  I use a Redington Redfly set up. It's heavy enough for the salmon yet light enough to still allow you to enjoy the fight of the occasional steel or brown you may get into.

Never tried using a 7wt.  only my 9wt. and it's more than enough.  As I said my buddy uses an 8wt with no troubles,  seems a 7wt. might be a little light but sure would be fun. let me know if you try it.

I've used a 9.5 foot St. Croix Avid in 7 wt on more than one occassion--landed many salmon on this rod--wouldn't dream of using a 7 wt with high water.....and I wouldn't recommend to anyone to use a 7wt for king salmon fishing in New York or anywhere else for that matter........I have bad shoulders and after a day of fishing with the St. Croix LU 10.5 foot 9wt or the Beulah 9/10 switch........my shoulders were burning and I'd turn to the 7wt......it can be done..........just know your gear and what it is capable of

I also fished salmon with a Winston 11 foot 7 wt switch rod (perfecto steelie stick) ...........this handled the salmon without any issues what so ever..........

As WD and PA have stated.........best to go 8 wt or higher...........I think a 9 wt is perfect under most conditions.....and my dad fishes a 9 foot St. Croix Legend Ultra 10 wt all the time.........

my one setup that I loved was a G-Loomis 9 foot 8wt GL3 matched with a Fly Logic FLP 567 reel and it was loaded with Teeny 8wt mini-sink tip fly line.......that was a blast to fish.......it was a casting monster
