I got to shoot a Maxxis 31 and a Z7 today. Both were excellent. The 31 was smooth the entire draw and the Z7 had a hump near the wall. Recoil was excellent on both. The 31 had the xtr limbs. The 31 was a bit faster despite the Z7 was an inch longer in draw and a few pounds heavier in draw wt.Never owned a Hoyt, maybe now it's time. Who gives the best deals on Hoyts?

Outdoor are you sure the limbs weren't xts arc?A buddy of mine has the z7 i shoot it a few times it's only set on 60#.It is a smooth shooting machine but your right about speed on them i think he's was only shooting in the high 250 or low 260 i can't remember exactly.I told the wife the other that's what i wanna for my b-day was a z7.I highly doubt you'll get a 31 much under what the local shop sells them for in your area.I did see a few on ebay at the beginning of the year when i bought mine though.

MM, that is one wicked setup ya got there. I sure hope sasquatch doesn't cross by a stand of yours....

OA, Unless something has changed, I am fairly certain that the manufacturers set the price on their new bows not the retailers, at least with the "higher echelon" brands. The only exception is for discontinued ones and leftovers which will carry a little price reduction.

When I bought my Hoyt about 4 years ago, I bought a discontinued model and got about $100 off msrp. I don't know where you are from, but Butler Sportsman Supply carries Hoyt and that is where I do my Hoyt shopping.

I would go with the QAD.I have one on my maxxis it's been flawless.I was going to go with the FMJ but the guy at the shop said if you hit one while practing it we dent it.I really get good arrow flight out of the axis.

Another vote for the QAD here, I love mine.

I bought some Carbon Express Piledrivers for the upcoming season. They are a little heavier arrow than the gold tips I used to shoot, but they should penetrate well. These arrows are Carbon Express's answer to the FMJ, but without the durability issues of the FMJ. I have no experience with them on game yet, but they shoot very well at the range.

Thanks guys for the input. I'm going tomorrow and try and get the things needed so I can set up the bow next week when it arrives. I don't usually wait till this late in the year to purchase a bow but I just got a chance to shoot one. I'm going with a QAD ultra pro rest,HHA .019 single pin with rheostat sight, probably Fuse quiver and stab if needed. Still unsure on arrows yet. Thanks again for input. Keep it coming...

Which model HHA i went with the ds xl5519.The only thing i'm worried about is forgetting to roll the dial.I've always used one pin sights because 5 or 6 pins just was to confusing for me.

I'm thinking XL either 5519 0r 5510. I like the bigger housing but not sure hows it going to work with a large peep. I like small pin .010 but have to check them out. The .019 is BRIGHT and I woulds get the rheostat model if I go with that size pin. As far as rolling the dial, I have used one pin for a long time usually set at 25 yd and know how much higher to hold out to 45. Never shoot past that while hunting. So if I can't adjust sight, I just adjust my pin placement. With the new speed bows multi pins are not for me, too close.

Nice Stats, but deer can be killed with alot less,One of my better years,I had a new sting put on my XI bow,and didn't pay to much attention at the bow shop on the poundage,I adjusted my sight and shot 5 deer in two states that year,my bow was set on 53 lbs and was shooting a whoping 190 fps,all shots where under 25 yards, and shot with old Mini Blasters mechanicals.ARROW PLACMENT KILLS DEER.

A 22 will kill a deer with a properly placed shot. What is your point?

Are you just trying to justify that you only shoot 50#? Who cares, I am pretty sure shot placement has been covered once or twice on here and amazingly people agreed on its importance.

If you can comfortably pull 70#++ then why not shoot it? I have no issues pulling 72# pounds back so I will continue to keep my limbs maxed out. My next bow will likely have 80# limbs. Speed = flatter trajectory and more KE, neither of which are bad things....

You should hunt with the strongest bow you can comfortably draw and shoot after sitting in a stand for several hours in cold weather. I dropped mine back to 60# after I had been on stand 4 hours in 30 degree weather and couldn't break the 70# with a nice buck at 10 yds. My first buck was killed at 33 yds with a 42# recurve with wood arrows and a bear razor head and I had pass through. As stated, shot placement is the key.

Keep yourself loose and limber in the stand on the cold days and try to draw your bow every hr or so if you can.  Been there and done that on the cold day and having trouble drawing.....Usually got it drawn on the 2nd or 3rd try but with too much movement.

I shoot at 70# and as long as I shoot regularly for the 2 mos leading up to the season and get my muscles worked up for it, I am usually good, even in cold weather.  You need to be flinging arrows during the season too.  The only season I had trouble in the cold is when I got too lazy and didn't practice enough before the season (to condition my muscles) and didn't practice during the season much.

But, 50# or 55# will kill a deer just the same as 70# or 80# if the archer knows the bow, their limits and hits their target.

Esox-Hunter,my point was I don't shoot a 53 lb,but it did just as good of job,all deer where shot broadside and double lunged,I've shot bows for quite a while 63- 68 lbs have been my range, nice forgiving bow with speed in 240's to 260's fps.I'm not putting anybody down for shooting high poundage bow,but I guess few of you have taken late season deer in extreme cold conditions, good luck pulling back your heavy bows with all your extra clothes on.My first bow kill was in Potter Co. with a Bear polar LTD compound bow, and the bear razor head at 32 yards on the ground, shot quite a few deer on the ground back then, then the first climber, the Baker came out, what a piece of crap, bows have come a long way since then, but back then we thought we had the best bow there was.

It sure sounds like you are putting anyone down that shoots more weight than you. I have shot late season deer in brutal cold with the bow set at the same #72. If I struggle with it when its cold then its more weight than I should be shooting in any conditions. Why is so hard to believe that people can and do shoot much heavier weights than you, under any circumstance?

Tuna-- didn't you like the Baker I used to make my own climbers and the Baker was my first store bought one. Came out from under me one day and left me 15' up a 8" tree bear hugging the trunk. The issuing slide/fall destroyed the Baker and shortened my hunting season. They did add some excitement to the hunt.

S-10, I used to call my Baker "the tree stand of death". I was afraid to go any higher than 5 or 6 feet. Far to many rides down the tree trunks. Did make it interesting though....WF

I never did have very good luck with climbers which is probably why I use hang on's and tie on steps. I left a Loggy high in the tree and had to shinney down and get a extension ladder twice. I didn't get it set right and couldn't get it loose at the end of the hunt both times. Hunting from trees can get exciting even when you don't see a thing. I had the top break off on a large popular I was in during a windstorm in the 80's and nearly took me with it. I had just started using safety belts.

Yes that Baker gave me more than one ride, never climb a cherry tree with one, it took me awhile to learn, but those things where scary.I use ladders stands since 92,not as moblie, but fill safe. To Esox, your missing my point, you can shoot a 100 pound bow and I could care less,my deer is just as dead as yours.

well I just got the new Bear Assault, couldnt be happier! Its the best bow I have ever owned by far, got it because it seemed like the best value in new bows this year. If I had the money I might go with a more hyped up company but shoots just fine for me.
70lbs its nothing for me to pull but ive never came across anything heavier to even try to shoot. I like the fact that with a 80% let off setup I can easily hold for a while, not sure how long Id be able to hold back 80-90lbs esp if let off is at 65%.
No doubt a powerful rig that hoyt is though, what would the plain bow cost?
Anybody shoot or have the bear Attack? I would have liked to been able to afford it.
