Kids fishing area

Wolf Creek (aproved trout waters) in Grove City has a section of water that is for kids 12 & under and people with disabilities only. I was just wondering if anyone would support an area like that on any of the Lake Erie tribs for Steelhead. I am thinking the mouth of Walnut is already for people with disabilities only, but I am not sure if kids can fish there. Anyway, what does everyone think?

I think that the Nut from the bridge to the lake should be only for kids and the disabled. But how do you prove a disability? We don't have to wear a big blue "D" on our backs, , , Yet! But the cane, limp and /or crutches might be a give-away.

bridge down to the lake- kids and disabled
    or
bridge up to the top of the chutes- kids and disabled

    YES!

but think about how many "sportsmen" would be upset over that one

you know you would have evry tom****and harry screaming that they are disabled and have the right to fish these areas just like they do with the parking any where you go and also the people who just dont care and park in the handi capped spots and they would do the samething there some people just dont care about things like that. just sayin.   as for me i agree we should have something like that some where, could you imagine the thrill it could give some of those people to catch something like that.

I've always said I love to see a portion of the Wall have wheelchair chocks built in; say from the South end to the boat launch and then have them make the whole corner of the lot for handicapped only. another nice touch would be permanent long handled nets so handicapped could net the fish they catch. Of course some jagoffs would steal the nets. But there are a few of us who as long as we can still waddle (but we pay for it later) will still get up and try to walk the creeks.

    Big,

I really loke this idea!  However, IMO, the area has to be narrowly defined as to keep the "abusers" out.  For example:

    1. Deisignated area for children 12 and under is a no brainer.  Only issue i see is how can you verify between a 12 yr old and a 14 yr old?  Kids today it is hard to tell what age they are and they begin to lie at an early age.  Then put paint on their nails and color their lips, who the heck knows.  An issue that needs to be resolved.

    2. Wheelchair Access Only - I would prefer to have it as this as opposed to using the world "Handicapped Access."  Simply put, every Tom,**** and Harry with a Handicapped Parking pass would feel the need to fish there.  They hand these things out like candy at a parade.  If we were all to be honest, a good number of these parking pass owners are no more handicapped than you and I (unless they are mentally handicapped - then they may have a point).  Having a little limp or a little back pain does not get you into this wall area.  Reserve it to those who really are DISABLED.

I don't think it is in our best interest to close one of the largest parcels of public land
(and most productive) to the open public. Where do you expect all of those people to go? Upstream on privite property? The state has not acquired enough public access to discriminate to the masses.

I'll have the same answer for you when the "fly fishing only" section topic comes up in another month (like it does every year).

    Tim,

That is a good point!  However, I am willing to bet that the majority of the folks that fish The Wall only do so because it is easy access.  If they had to acftually walk to a spot or fish spots where real fishing work was needed, they would not do so.  Would be interesting to inject a tracking devise in these folks to see if that is true or not.  Once themn fishies get passed the wall and the major fall run is over, most of them folks are done fishing.

    Sig,

I'm not into catching old beat up steelhead, so I don't do as much fishing upstream as I used to. Those fish upstream are just as dumb as they were when they rolled into the mouths. They just look a little crappier, and fight a little less. I'll take fresh early runners off the wall and in the lower portions of other streams anyday.

I think the fishing around the mouths might actualy be alot harder for most erie "steelheaders". What in the world do they do when theres no drift to move their yarn under a float?

    Tim,

Another great point!  However, as an able-bodied person, you do have other places that you can go to catch fresh chrome.  However, for the wheelchair bound person, opportunities are severly limited.  The Wall provides the perfect place for such people.  Perhaps 1/2 of it could be designated - as a compromise.

He has a small section, above Girard. The opposite side, is open to the public.

Imagine paying big bucks to fish face to face with the riffraff

If there were going to be a kids/disabled area only, I'd rather see it from the boat ramp on Elk to the downstream end of the rock bank. Yes it's a shorter area but plenty big enough and just as ,if not more productive.  I say this even though I fish that area allot.  I still think it's better than closing lower walnut to the goons. That is the best place for them, on fish commission property, enough goons have migrated out of that area over the years, lets not drive out the rest.

I also believe there should be a time frame for that kids/disabled area only, say from the ramp to the downstream end of the rocks, from Sept. 15th through November 30th.  Usually there is plenty of room for everyone before and after that.
