VHF Radio

I am wanting to purchase a hanheld vhf radio. I have never owned one or used one so I'm basically looking for advice or opinions from those who have used them. My primary reasons for wanting one is for communication on the water... in emergencies if necessary and possibly fishing in tournaments. Also to catch weather warnings. I usually take an annual trip to Ontario to fish for a week and the guy who owns the Cottage keeps one on an monitors it so I could have communication if necessary there. So far I have only looked at what Cabelas sells.
Any help would be great. Thanks!

Batteries that are rechargeable from a 12v plug would be near the top of my list for requirements.
I can only recharge my Humminbird VHF5 on 110v but do have a battery eliminator.
