Staging Steelhead

When will the Steelhead begin staging off the mouths? I would like to come up to Erie and fish from the shoreline but I am traveling 3 1/2 hours and don't want to waste a trip. Do you guys think I will be able to chuck some spoons and float skein from the shore on Labor Day weekend? It is only 3 weeks away

1st one of many to come, it's no wonder why the locals hate the out of townsman(i'm one) just be a lurker on here and you will know if the "heat" is on up there. this rain is helping things but the temperatures are not. asking them kinds of questions on here is opening yourself to a whole new world of mental hurt!! mouth shut but eyes open----sometimes better!!!!

    Sure.

There might not be any fish around, but you can still do it. Actually, there are almost always a few fish hanging around by labor ( early morning ). Given the current temps, I wouldn't expect that number to be very high.

Acually an easier way is to just say; watch and wait for a North Easterly wind and for the lake to turn over. Watch the Lake Shore temps and charter boat captain reports, which can be found online pretty easily (fisherie reports page). Couple this with cool mornings and you usually will have small schools start to roam the beaches around the tributary mouths. I have found your best chances are from around September 1 until the masses arrive in October. This is not exact science, but it will put you in the ball park and is usually the information I seek and the time I start surfing.

Information can be given without spot burning, and fishing along side an educated angler is a far better experience than one who is not.

I hope this helps you out...

Actually he got two of the best informed totally informative answers I've ever seen on this site. Watch the fishing reports and wait for cooler weather, and for the lake to turn over (caused by cooler water pushing down on the column of water warmed by the summer sun) When this happens the denser, more highly oxygenated water from the , now cooling , surface settles into the lake causing the fish to rise from the cool depths where they have spent the summer. Steelhead HATE warm water. Also the advice to wait for a prevailing easterly wind indicates cooler water and, the possibility of cooler rain and a raising of the water levels in the tribs along with increased cool water flow. Makes perfect sense to me. But then I've only been coming up there for about 30 years (+/-).
Would a better answer have been: "Wait till you see a picture posted of some doofus with his hand jammed in the gills of a fresh caught steelhead standing on the Wall at Walnut?"

As everyone remembers, last year's steelhead numbers seemed to be way down.....I remember there was one good  push of steelies in the third week of September on Elk.  They were found in a large pod near the boat launch....Here's to hoping the numbers are back up.....

No they didn't. There were absolutely NO fish in the east side tribs last year. Waste of time to go there.

Im not a skilled steelheader. I need the numbers so I can hook into em. Go west , thats where all the fish go anyways.
