half hitch or whip finish

just started tieing yesterday is the half hitch good enough or schould i be ending with the whip finish all i have tied so far is some sucker spawns an some woolie buggers and a cone head leach

    Once you get the whip finish down it just becomes automatic.

    Agreed. It is a technique that is definitely worth the time and trouble to learn to do without thinking about it. The key is having just enough tension to avoid slack, but no more than that, so that the thread can still feed into the knot.

    Definately the whip finish is best, even better done twice...no need to apply head cement either.

    Either one will work, if tied properly. Neither one will work if tied improperly.

    There's also the zap-a-gap finish...

    For the majority of my "box filler" flies, I just throw two whip finishes on them. For my "showy flies", one whip finish, with at least 3 coats of lacquer. For my warm water/salt water/steelhead swinging flies, usually 2-3 whip finishes and a shot of thinned head cement. Those are the flies most likely to get the heads torn into, and as a result, are the ones I try to make the most resilient, if a bit ugly.

    thanks steely for putting that up there i just started tying and i use the half hitch cause i get confused with the whip finish but i will try it again and again and so on with your tute and see if that helps.

    whip finish, 5 or 6 turns, no tool required for flies larger than about a 12, use your fingers, couple coats of head cement for swinging style flies. With a little practice, it's easy to do.

    I tend to agree with Cold. For us newbie tyers, the "Zap-A-GAP" finish is always a great back-up plan!!

    Learn the whip finish. Its way faster than 4 half hitches+head cement.

    Yeah, I know. I need to learn it just for the simple fact I hate haviving a tool in my desk that I don't know how to use.

    Hahaha, I'm in a similar way with my rotating hackle pliers...not so much 'how' as much as 'why'.

    Double whip finish for me as once in a great while, the first knot gets unraveled or cut.

    yep, double whip here as well. Especially where the tie off is behind beads and cones. I use the griffin rotating tool.
