turtle rig

can anyone give me advice on how to make a turtle rig. also do you have to place them in like a outdoor tub or something for a few days or can you kill them the day you catch them. i have never fished for them but i know a place that has some really nice size snappers in it. any info would help

Years ago me and a friend caught some in a small farm pond and used 3/0 hooks on 30 pound line on a homemade trotline with milk jugs attached.Bait was chicken liver and bluegill heads. After we caught a few there was a spring that ran into a old bathtub we put them into the tub for 2 days them my friends dad did the rest.We all said we wouldnt eat it but after it was made like chicken noodle soup everyone went back for 2nds.

I am trying this for the first time also. You need a certain size hook. I think it is 1 inch from shank to tip, I might be wrong look in the regs it is there. Chicken liver will work but the small fish will clean your hook quickly. I had sunfish clean the first set I put out in 10 minutes. I did catch  one on liver though. I am using chicken gizzards now.
I had one that was bigger break my string as I tried to pull it on to shore. You will want some strong string like chalk line string. I am using a nylon string rated at 100 pounds and it broke
I was told you need to keep them for at least a week and change water daily to clean them out.
    Good luck

Last year on the "paanglers.com" site ,there was a turtle catcher that did a step-by-step post on how to properly prepare a turtle.
I think he even had pics posted on it!

You might want to check there and do a search on "turtle" or "snapper".

    Good luck!

try cow tonge on a turtle hook the meat is tough and small fish won't clean it use piece just big enough to cover the hook so turtle will swallow it whole as for the line i used masonary line tied on to tree a big turtle can grab the bottom preaty good but he has to come up for air sooner or later

    http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-clean-a-turtle/

    from the PAFBC site:
"Set-lines, turtle traps, or other devices for catching turtles must include a tag indicating the name, address, and phone number of the owner or user. Traps, nets, or other devices must be of a floating or partially submerged design so as to allow for the release of untargeted turtles. Hooks must be at least 3.5 inches long with not less than one inch space between the point and shank of the hook. The number of lines or hooks per line is unlimited."

    Snapping Turtle Consumption Advice

Snapping turtle meat has been found to contain only small amounts of PCB’s and is safe to eat without restrictions. Snapping turtles do retain PCBs in their fat and internal organs. If you choose to eat snapping turtles, you can reduce your exposure by carefully trimming away all fat and internal organs and discarding them before cooking the meat or making soup.

Snappin turtle are very good eating.  If you get one put them in a tub or some type of large container that they cant get out of.  Put some water in as well.  Just enough to almost cover the shell.  I keep them in there about 4 days or so.  Do not feed them anything.  You want them to clean them selves out.  This will make the turtle less smelly when you clean them.  Clean or replace the water daily.  Had some turtle this past saturday.  Fried.  Didnt last 10 minutes.   Havent gotten any yet.  But I cant wait til I do!!  Good luck.

Used to go every year! They do sell the "turtle hooks" at most bait shops. The if you can find parachute cord I heard id the best, but 200+lb test nylon rope will do you fine, then use strips of scaled carp meat, thread it on the hook, but leave 8-10inches hang off like a tail. Good luck and have fun!!!!!

As excited as I am to get this turtle and to try out an awesome recipe, I feel disgusted at the same time. I got this turtle this morning at around 10am. We rebaited and reset the lines. Checked them this evening around 8 and one of my lines and one of my buddies lines were taken. Rope bottle and all. And our required i.d. tags. So now some idiot knows my name and where I live. Any how good luck to all you turtle guys. And be safe.
