Generic Hooks
I am ordering all of the materials that I need to tie all of my bulk steelhead flies in the next two weeks and am trying to decide what to do about hooks. Last year I used Tiemco and some Dai-Riki but with as many as I am planning to tie this year it will add up very quickly. Anyone use generic hooks like those from Jstockard? What are your opinions or should I just bite the bullet and buy quality hooks? If so, from where?

Buy quality hooks. Tiemco or Daiichi. Mustad signature series are pretty good also. Cheap hooks bend, break, points dull too easily. Fish USA has some quality hooks. Most of your local fly shops as well.

HC - Yeah I know what ya mean about the cost of hooks. It can add up pretty quick. I don't use many Tiemco hooks - don't know why other than I just never felt the need to get away from Dai-Riki. I do have quite a few tied on Mustad also but I've found over the years that quite often within the boxes of 100 there are a few with eyes that are opened up and even a few with just the shaft and no hook bend. Plus the carbon steel isn't as tight as Dai-Riki ending up in more sharpening. Check E-Bay - sometimes you can find some pretty good deals in bulk there. Dai-Riki makes a hook called the X-Point which IMO (for what that's worth) is an excellent hook. Chisel point that never seems to need sharpening but it is pricey. So in short - do what you want but I think what you'll find in cheaper hooks - the main thing is the ability to maintain sharpness plus what Plum says - they can also bend or even break, Everyone's got their preference though.

I picked up 300 cheap scud hooks off of one of the hook guys on ebay.. They were very cheap in price and also very cheaply made hooks.. Some eyes not closed, will dull if you just look at them  ....Very cheap wire....  Watch ebay for lots of brand name hooks, some good deals on there....

My take is...if you're going to go to all the effort of tying...why try to save a few bucks by using some no-name hook? You don't have to go top of the line, but get something with a reputable name. Plenty of reasonably priced fly hooks out there.

mustads are 10.00 a hundred so at that rate a box should tie pretty much all the flys u need

The problem I ran into with some older mustads was that they rusted alot easier than the generic hooks that I got from a friend. I don't know if it was that they were older or what, Ill have to check them out again. That is about the price that Jstockard hooks are so I don't know if they are comparable or not.

Get some of those zerust tabs and glue one in your fly box. Problem solved.

like he said. i only go to other brands when i can't find a size or bend i can't get from mustad. i have no problem hooking fish with mustads. yes, i carry a small hone when i feel the point is dull, this is when i'm missing hook ups that may not necessarily be a dull hook  . i'd carry a hook hone with me know matter what hooks i use anyhow. ~dt

if you are tying sucker spawns or egg patterns, you can use a VMC octopus hooks--you can get 100 of them for around 6 bucks--I even tie caddis flies on this hook..........I normally use the VMC hooks, mustad c67s hooks and streamer hooks, togen hooks for my salmon flies, and daiichi hooks for trouties.........I once purchased from a bulk guy on Ebay, never again...pretty sure the hooks sent were not Dai-Riki hooks.......they were pee poor cheap hooks........I did pick up some DX510 dai-riki hooks to use this year.......6 bucks for 25 $$$$.............I also like to use the Gamakatsu T10-68 hook---great for streamers and stoneflies--$$$$ but a very solid hook.......
for all the time and money invested on gear, flies and trips........the last thing I want to fail on me is my hook

Rather than use cheap hooks I've tried to economize by limiting the variety and sizes of hooks I use. I don't really need several different styles of streamer hooks or nymph hooks, and on dries I've pretty much settled on #16s.

You can get daichii in 100 packs for about $14 if you look around. 1150 I believe.. heavy wire wide-gap.

Use Daiichi 1120 for egg and caddis patterns and 1530 for your nymphs
