Bowfins in pa.

I was just kinda curious, about why they dont seemed to be recognized as a Pennsylvanian fish. Just looking around the pa game commission website or whatever it is. They list all the fish, invasive species, but no mention of bowfin anywhere. Sorry if it seems to be a stupid question.

I didnt see this. Hmmm maybe blind. Looking

As a Pennsylvania candidate species, the Commission strongly encourages anglers to immediately release bowfins back to the water unharmed.

Can you enlighten me to what candidate species means. Is it like they are endangered or they are trying to grow the population. Something like that.

http://fishandboat.com/fish_species.htm Thats the link I was looking under and why I didnt see it, but still no state record or anything. From what Ive seen.

Naw I dont eat fish just love fishing. Its all catch and release with me.  Anyway the bowfin is a pretty interesting fish to me for some reason. I think maybe because its the biggest fish Ive ever caught. 29 inches 8-9 lbs.

I'm lacking the research recently but I think Bowfins are a CANIDATE to be placed on the THREATENED or ENDANGERED species list.

The fish commission noticed low numbers and are waiting for the beauraucratic red tape to be cut. So the bowfin situation will be similar when they are placed on the lists but it will be official.

If you live in Central PA and want to catch one I hear Blackie has a nice supply of them still. I used to catch them there 10 years ago when fishing for other species.

i haven't noticed the declining numbers, the pfbc released them in glendale lake and they have absolutely taken off!! they are everywhere, you put some meat on the bottom and you WILL get one. I really can't see them being on the endangered list, i was browsing thru some websites and they are popping up in alot of the streams and lakes you would have never thought of.

Canidate species just basically means that they could become a threatend species in the future. No rules limiting the harvest of these fish as of yet. Its just recommended that you release them. The waters that have them seem to have decent numbers from what I hear.

I caught several Bowfin in Lake Lebouef and also Marina Lake( presque isle) in the spring is filled with those toothy suckers. They are a very aggresive fish.  I've caught em on crawlers and a bobber also on crankbaits.  They seem to live in same areas as largemouth bass prefering cover and weedbeds.  Anyone whose caught one know they put up a nice fight too!!  and will bite you.  They make a snapping sound when closing their jaw tight....(first hand experience, literally

I have heard that they are in there, but not in big numbers. I live close to here. PM me if you have some suggestions on where to fish for them there and what to use. Glendale is a good hike for me.
