Dudes- I may take a spin up there next week for some Salmo Salmons. I got some Pretty flies.
Who close wants to fish a day if I swing it?

i'll definitely be up the weekend of 7th and 8th. probably a long weekend. don't know if it's thurs to sun, or sat to tues. probably working most of the time, but i will find a little time to target an atlantic, summer run, brown, or small mouth... who knows, maybe even a king...

fresh steel...they float kayaks in the river when they do the dam releases never did it but it looks like fun. i'm more concerned with the fish that enter the river with the dam releases.

I may scoot up for a day, but next month this time I will be there for a better shot if things work out. Being 4+ hours out sucks.

every year myself and hundreds of others loose thousands of hooks and flies to snags on the bottom and gobs of line tangles and things, cant imagine being in a kayak and doing one of those barrell rolls they do and finding a hook that gets embedded in me then trying to pull it out against the current, ouch! Like I tell anyone that floats with me, there are no brakes on my drift boat so if you see line hanging from a branch dont touch it cause if there is a hook in it by the time I drop anchor and stop that hook will be sunk in you and your gonna be screaming! I guess what im saying is the salmon is not a place i would recreational kayak, nor a place I would bring my dog like I see so many people doing.

i've swam the river a few times and 3fan, i have had the same thoughts as you. surprisingly though, many guys kayak it and i've never heard of anything serious happening. every summer i see more and more. once i saw 2 guys come through the rapids between tall bridge and short bridge in november in 2500 cfs in wet suits. that's what i call a die hard. they must of come through the ball park as well. god bless their souls...

right salmo... i though i was crazy for standing in the water with waders in those conditions.. these guys were nuts. i've seen the black hole divers myself. they are crazy if they don't have those floating things attached to them that follow the everywhere they go to alert people above that they are down below. years and years ago they found a body down in the depths of the blackhole... after hearing that one, i don't think you'll catch me swimming the depths of it....

Years ago three couples that were fishing Canada stopped by the SR to try their luck.Since they were unfamiliar with the river and Salmon they stopped into a local tackle shop for some gear/advice,they were told to buy corkers if they intended to wade, they disregarded that advice 'cause of the expense!Well one of those male anglers decided to wade upstream of the "hole" during a high water event and he went where he should n't have and was swept into those black, deep, parts of the "hole",when he came out at the tail of the hole it was too late,he was beyond help! That area is very dangerous when the water is up.

The guy that drowned a couple of years ago when he tried to to cross the tailout of the Black Hole was wearing Korkers.

He should have used his brain instead and stayed on the bank.

I feel sorry for the rescue crew members who risk their lives to collect the Darwinians.

Yes Drake, there have been a few in recent years that went down in the tailout. It's deceiving as it is flat water, but very swift when the water is up,and also deeper than it looks.Lose your footing there and it's a quick ride into the rapids below and when you hit that water you are in real trouble.
Anything over 500 cfs is marginal wading and 750 cfs is don't go above your knees.

for a while there it seemed like every year or every other year that someone would drown up there and yeah it's always the tail of the black. i wear korkers even in the lowest water condtions in the upper river as well. it should be a state requirement for the entire river if you ask me. 2 years ago in the pocket water right above wall pool in douglaston a drunk kid went down above us. myself my brother and a local guide stepped in to about 3.5 foot of black rolling water to grab this knuckle head while all of his friends were laughing on the bank. his face was white while we dragged him out right before the 2 ft. haystack he was about to hit. he would've been dead...
