minnow traps

i set my minnow trap out yesterday morning and checked it a few hours later and had almost a dozen 4 - 8 inch minnows in it. i went out this morning to check it and discovered almost 2 dozen crawfish from 3 - 5 inches long in there and all the minnies had become their meal. anyone else ever had this happen?

I've had snakes clean 'em out before but never noticed a problem with Crawdads. Sometimes when we are fishin' for Chubs & have some traps set the trap could have a few doz. in it in no time then 1/2 hr. later only a few. If u see a doz. or so in the trap pull it & reset, they can & do escape. Crabs r good u noE/

Crawdads can clean em up overnight,I have used a sapling to hang the trap from thus keeping off the bottom enough to eliminate the problem. Then you might encounter a thief seeing the string though.

I have had snakes eat my minnows. The worst problem I have had is a coon. It took the coon three times to figure out how to get in it. The first two times I found my trap drug up on shore. The third time it must have jumped or stood where the wire goes into the metal to hold the two halves together until the wire came out.

Almost everytime i leave a trap out overnight i get a watersnake in it,then id drowns, then the crawfish come in and eat the snake. Took me awhile to figure it out when i was 14 and just bought my first minnow trap.

This time of year keeping minnows is tricky.  You gotta keep checking your traps, and once you do find something in them, you should have an additional floating bucket to keep them in, rebait and throw your trap out again.  Luckily I have a little feeder stream behind my Dad's house that I can keep both a floating bucket and a trap in and don't have to worry about it being stolen.  Without a stream, pond, or lake.  It is tough to keep those buggers alive more than overnight.

Crawdads can be the best steelhead bait of all at certain times.   I've never had the problem of catching any though.     All i get is 3-4 dozen minnows in about 6 hours baiting my trap with a can of sardines.    I find a nice little pocket in the creek where the water depth is about the same as the dia of my trap.

I use dog or cat food for bait. Keep them in my basement in a tote with an aquarium filter. I put a frozen 2 liter pop bottle in everyday to keep it cold.

Some tips to avoid having traps stolen. I paint all of my traps black or brown so they are hard to see. I don't use any rope on them wade to put in and take out. Don't put your traps near bridges or where you you know other people are trapping.

Last time I set a trap I got 3 doz minnows, 8 crabs, and a 18" snake with a missing face..... I have tags on mine that give name, address and phone number. Taking a trap because you "found" it is ignorant and shows poor morals period. If you want a trap, go to the store and buy one only lowlifes steal ESPECIALLY from other sportsmen. What a descent person would do is remember where you found it, and come with your own trap next time you need some bait, the guy spoon fed you the location thats the hard part is finding a good place. Man up!

good tip on suspending them! I never thought of that.....

set two traps, one with bread for the minnows and another with a can of cat or dog food with holes poked in it. The crawdads will go to the one with the pet food and the minnows to the bread. Easy solution if the crabs keep eating the baitfish !

What size r the Crawdads u guys trappin'?? Lobster sz?? Can't see them eatin' a bunch ov bait fish over night. Their mouth is sm.. Try a test... put a doz. bait fish in a bucket with a 1/2 doz. crabs over night. They r either escaping or snakes r eating 'em.

    crappy

    This disgusts me......
If your momma caught u with your hand in the cookie jar, doesn't mean u ate all the cookies. It could ov been your sister, brother, friend or old man, but you are the one that got spanked The crab should be Innocent until proven guilty if u ask me. You shouldn't blame the crab until u get all the facts.

Now I won't be able to sleep tonight!!!

    Thanks

And another thing, anyone who has more than 500 post on FUSA has some major issues in life

I thought that I had read in the PA fishing by-laws that it is illegal to take the minnow trap of another that is tagged with the owners' name , etc ... unless one had written permission with them . Of course there is also the social aspect of it as well as others have written . I know that it's illegal to take crab and lobster pots and if caught or as much as suspected , the owners' will punish the thief far worse than the Law will .

Haven't yet. They usually drop the trap and leave.Remember we are only talking about an $8 trap here. If I'm in an area where I think someone will steal my camera rather fishing or hunting I set multiple cameras.
