Steelhead Hairwings

Starting to tie some of these interesting patterns. Here's the first one I decided to try: the Rusty Rat

Great tie cold, one question for you though. Do you fish these flies or not?

Bruce, thanks for the kind words. Compliments mean a lot from someone as skilled as you. I think I may have been a bit off in the proportions, having too much floss and too little herl. While I see it, it may not be a big deal. What do you think?

HC, yes, I do fish my flies. Anything you see that I've pictured is fair game in my boxes to get tied on and thrown to the drink. A few of my nicer wet flies I have in a seperate box that doesn't go out with me, but that's a total of under a dozen flies. I have absolutely no skills at framing flies or building a shadow box, so all of my flies are, by default, fishing flies.

That said, I have thought about putting together a shadow box, whether of winged wets, hairwings, or otherwise. Just never got the gumption to actually read up on how to do it.

Cold - not sure if you saw if before but there is a tute on how to build a shadowbox - pretty cheap - using materials you can buy at a craft store. It's in the tutorial section under Framing Flies. Either way you should consider it. Very, very nice tie...once again.

Yup, the proportions are off but you saw that in this tie and next will be that much better, so lets see more!

Nice tie,if you take that to the fly zones on the Salmon River in Sept. when the Coho run there I assure you would have some reel screaming fun!I use a streamer that is very similar and the Coho go nuts over it,two months and counting.

Nice ties Cold. Just curious, what size hooks did you tie those last 3 on? My only comment on them is a personal preference. On the green butt, I like my hackle to be a little longer. If you have any trouble fishing them, send them over here

All 4 of these are tied on Dai-Riki #899 hooks in a size 2.

I didn't have the hackle I wanted for either of these. But they'll fish. I think they look okay too, but like you said, not ideal.
