Yough Bass

How's everyone fishin been lately? I took my girlfriends little brother down the yough to try for some bass and could'nt believe we didn't even get a bite. I usually catch at least 5 in an hour or two at this spot but no good. He's 9 years old and still had fun getting wet up to his shoulders! I need to remember to take a towel next time.

I have had the same experience. I have been on a smallie drought that dates back to last august on the conemaugh. I finally got into some fish earlier this week, in the heat. the fish are not in the usual places this year and I don't know why.

Just got back from the stretch between cedar creek and west newton. Caught 2 nice smallies, lost a few (threw the hook), and had several good strikes that I just didn't have a chance to play.

No pics though. Digital cameras and my wading skillz in the yough just don't mix.

You can buy disposable digital waterproof cameras. I have seen them at walgreens. If you're good with a computer I've heard of people hacking them to make them more than one use.

I'll have to look into that, or maybe just a new waterproof digital.

The one that I caught was a beauty, and I sure would have liked to have a couple of pics.

I just bought the olympus stylus at sama club for under $200. It's drop proof, waterproof, and freeze proof and takes great pics so far.

has anyone ever fished the white water section of the river for bass? I imagine that there should be good numbers of bass in the pools formed by the white water. That has been my experience on other white water rivers, especially in the hot days of summer.

couldnt say now but yrs ago i used to ride a bicycle on the bike trail and fish for trout in those white water pockets and caught some smallmouth and couple pike on night crawlers and dare devil spoons. i would imagine if they were in there then they should be today as well.

Being a noob on the yough, that is how I find where I'm fishing. I figure that the fast tumbly water makes holes for the fish to hang out in.

The fast moving stretch I was in a couple of weekends ago made for a couple of unmistakable strikes, and a good fight. The hard part is getting it slow and low enough to get the hit without getting snagged on rocks.

Being the "expert angler" that my post count says, this may seem like a stupid question, but here goes-

Are the walleye similar to the mall mouth in color, just thinner body, slightly smaller mouth, and not nearly as feisty? I catch a couple of these every time I go out. I can't tell if they are just smaller bass or smaller walleye?

the walleye will be more tubular in shape and will have small teeth in their mouth. the teeth are a dead giveaway.

In general, walleyes fight like a roll of wet toilet paper and smallies will fight and jump.

when we canoe the middle yough, we make a point to anchor in the faster water, and every year the smallies hit hard, as well as a few rainbows.

Haha! Just got back from a saturday afternoon skunk and dunk.

Waded in down stream from the parking lot at cedar creek about 1/4 mile. Went across to the train tracks side and walked up-stream. Saw a few good sized but unidentifiable fish rolling out from rocks and hitting nymphs. Tried to cross over about 100 yards down from the delta of the creek. The water kept getting a little deeper and pushing a little harder until it got about chest deep, then WOOSH, off my feet and away I went.

Soaked a pack and a half of smokes and didn't catch a darn thing. The ones that I saw did look very nice though.

I know there is a boat launch @ Cedar Creek, but how far up and down river can you go?
