my dark-side outing

circle hooks, ambassadeur reels, stiff casting rods, a coleman lantern calling in every bug within 20 miles, and stinky chicken livers.  i felt like an atheist in the vatican.  i kept my hat brim low so i wouldn't be recognized.  and.........i caught nothing.

forgive me.

Fish at night are usually fearful of artificial light, with the exception of the baitfish that gather for the bugs and the crappie that gather for the baitfish!

If you're having problems with bugs (i.e. blackflies, no-seeums, deerflies, mosquitoes, etc.) make some fly dope with camphor, citronella, and oil of tar
(kerosene) with a mineral oil base. Sold commercially under "Old Woodsman". They will leave you alone!

bings....not yet, black would clash with my grey.

jon, i set the lantern back, way back so that i could just see the indicators on my line.  back in the mid-70s, every friday night in the summer would find me and my buds night fishing for cats.  guess i am an old hand at it.  but now i am an elitist, choosing smallmouth, walleye and pa. stream fish.....just kidding of course.  this was just a reminescent journey back.  and to keep bugs off, i do like the natives, i find a mud puddle and roll around in it for awhile.

If you ask me, Smallmouth are best at night too... Nothing more fun then hearing a big "slurp" as it takes a jitterbug from the top..
I prefer using bluegills for cat... No light, but do put glow sticks on the tip of my poles. Works well...

Rap...with each passing day, I find my own circle closing. I'm finding less importance in numbers...less importance in size...less importance on the fish themselves. Crowds still suck though.

I know it sounds sappy or cliche'....I've found a bigger picture....kind of a spiritual growth fer me.

Find a less populated area....and invite me.

mini light sticks attached to your rod tips and a led headlight make night fishing a whole lot less of a hassle.  with the light sticks you can see even the slightest bites.  go to lowes or home depot and pick yourself up an energizer 6 LED headlamp for $15, it will the best $15 you ever spent.

    well, yes. welcome.

If you have had a dark-side outing.  I am in a dark-side epoch and for the last 3 years or so, have fished more or less almost entirely at night.  Over time I'm come to realize that nearly every season has something that can be chased after dark.  whats the real + side for developing a certain tolerance for sleep deprivation, and all the extra difficulty of clambroing over dark riverside boulders at night.

time.  lots and lots of time.

I can ,when obsessed, pull off nearly a 2-3 hour trip everyother night.  Every third night is definitely doable... and over the calender I think I've caught just about every gamefish that swims in the alleghany at one time or another.  Even fish like trout and pike that are supposedly only active during the day.

doing it all at dark, does make certain things tough.  I'm not yet very good at icefishing after the dark, and would like to know more about bassin after dark.

    "Shrimp the other white meat"
Best bait I've used for channels! Way less messy than liver (plus no chance of salmonella either), stays on hook better too. I use the frozen raw medium size with shell, 40-60 shrimp per bag for like $5 or if you have a good seafood section you can buy them loose. I've caught carp, quillbacks, channels and smaller flatheads on these. (Plus a few turtles). I'll never go back to chix livers. Plus if you get hungry, they cook up real quick over a lantern or you can make shrimp kabobs if u have a fire going, ha-ha!
My dad has gone to shrimp as his go to bait when bassing and panfishing gets slow. Cut them up real small and fish them on the bottom with a sliding sinker. Big bull gills and bass will suck them up, I laughed at him at first until I saw the results.
