Better idea... Board of directors. It may not be in the best interest of the club and fishery to have a President who can use it for personal gain. Even though Howard Wagner guides and started the MMA (and Butler show). I think the number of years he has been established in the musky world and his reputation speaks for itself. Just look at some of the fish he has released. I thought of starting something like this just to raise money to stock fish. You cannot buy fingerlings from the F&BC but their are hatcheries in the midwest that sell them. They were about $12 per fish and average size was 9"-12". Rick Lorson told me that he thought the yough was receiving enough fish and would not want to put a different strain in with them. But he did tell me that he would not be opposed to a private club stocking the Mon. I just didn't put the time or energy in to trying to get this started but maybe now is the time for something like this.

count me in wolfie. Lorson has told me pretty much same thing. I allready know of a group of fishermen that buy some and stock them therselves. they are pretty hardcore and keep to themselves perhaps i can try talkin to them maybe we can jump in on their resources or get them to team up and work together.

ORIGINAL: dealinsteel Better idea... Board of directors Trust me Mike,I was joking about Yuck io ghe knee Guide Well I did take you literally. I hope people don't take it the wrong way. I know Brian personally and he's a nice guy. I was just giving an opinion. And I wasn't really saying I would want to be President of any such club, but I do like to help the fishing in this area if I can. I think Musky Maniac makes a good point about the water quality. No point in starting a club, raising money, stocking fish... to watch them all go belly up because of pollution. What happened at Dunkard was horrible and I hope the problems will be corrected.

Some contacts you guys can get in touch with to get started.. to see if there is potential for more stocking from the state or info on obtaining what you need to raise fingerlings on your own. lets all remember now.. it is on schedule for fish and boat to stock muskies this yr in one pool on the mon. i even had to give them my fishin log to help get this done. the pool thats recieving the fish is the pool i haunt.. but lets face it by stocking one pool gonna have every musky guy around on my pool. we need to get them to stock other pools not just one. like i saiad wont stock pt marion pool cause of water quality. my pool which is 10m pool is being stocked. we need to get some of the northern pools gettin stocked. lets just make some noise. maybe a petition or somethin to show them hey we are many.

Just curious... If they don't stock because of water quality issues, what do you hope to accomplish? Why not just fish where the water is cleaner and the stocked fish actually survive?

ORIGINAL: carpediem Just curious... If they don't stock because of water quality issues, what do you hope to accomplish? Why not just fish where the water is cleaner and the stocked fish actually survive? I don't think they stopped stocking the Mon (in 2007ish) due to water quality but it had to do with changes in the musky program. Instead of throwing a few fish here and there they decided to concentrate on certain waters. There were several places in Sw Pa that were removed from the stocking list.. Mon River, Donegal Lake, Beaver and Ohio Rivers I believe. A lot of the current water quality issues on the river are due to the recent dumping of frack water. I'm saying why start a big effort to raise money and stock if the river is going downhill. Hopefully it won't get bad and we could stock. I would love to help in any way to improve musky fishing in this part of the state so I don't have to drive hours north to have a decent chance at boating one. This will explain the changes better... http://www.fish.state.pa.us/newsreleases/2006/musky.htm

when i was dealing with lorson last yr about bringin stocking back . after havin to prove to him that was catching muskys by sending him pics and other info. he stated he needed to check water quality first which he done that last may..his response was the pool that borders wv line water quality was too bad to introduce fish. but next pool down river quality was great so he would stock that pool. so theres a good chance rest of pools down river quality should follow suit.. so my thoughts are lets pressure them to stock more pools. last time i spoke to him he told me they had a breakthrough at the hatcheries at linesville that they got the purebreads to finally eat the pellets. which is great news cause now it wont be so exspensive to raise them now. whereas before they would only eat minnows. so there are some positives .

specifically, where near elizabeth can one have a good chance of hooking onto a musky. i dont have time anymore to travel up to NW lakes like tamarack and pymy to chase musky. while this sucks, its giving me the opportunity to focus near local fisheries ie. mon river, allegheny, etc. I have a 16' deep v boat... some yough spots i assume are too shallow to risk the nice boat and motor!

Anyone fish the Allegheny near Freeport? I might head out there on Thursday. Any info would be appreciated. I was thinking about trolling big cranks, bucktails, and maybe live shiners. Any info on bait shops in the area would be appreciated also. Thanks

At the present the Allegheny is about 2 feet above normal and with the rain forecast for today i would imagine it will come up a little more by tomorrow. I fish north of Freeport so i can't give any advice on locations in this section.

I wouldn't suggest using live bait unless you are using a quick strike rig mortality rate is very high with live bait

As someone who has caught musky incidentally through the years on the mon. but just recently developed a stronger interest in going after them sprecifically, I would love to see the stocking of the mon continued. I believe there exists a very strong forage base. Many years plenty of gizzard shad also carp etc.. I know they may not be ideal forage for adult musky, but young skis should grow fast on the absolutely incredible numbers of emerald shiners. Ive never seen more of them on the Mon as i do in recent years.

Thanks Allegheny Bait and Tackle is under the Tarentum bridge if you are coming from the south. Transues is in Kittanning if your coming from up that way. There really isn't much else in the area. Good luck.

of course bigger skies are gonna eat whatever they want to but i recently found out from fish commission that mon has very large population of red horse suckers which bet they find very yummy, and also the gizzard shad are very large ive snagged a few trolling this yr that went 18 inches, plus lets not forget the sheephead and drum that are in such abundance. lots of big musky food.

Yeah burn em as fast as you can, i have caught 2 out of every 3 on the big blades in the 8, wide turns and they usually can't resist them. I have alot of faith in them during the warm water period over the past 3 seasons.
