ORIGINAL: carpediem Looking for some advice… I just bought some new trolling rods and I’m shopping for bulk spools. What do you guys suggest spooling them with? I’ve read about some guys that prefer to run mono because they like having the extra stretch to keep from ripping the hook from the fish’s mouth when trolling at speed. They say it also takes some of the stress off the rod/reel if you get snagged on bottom. I was just going to buy a bulk spool of 80lb PowerPro and make my own leaders out of heavy mono (I think it’s 120 lb) swivel and snap. Any thoughts? Thanks! I'll cover two topics that you asked on and give you my overall opinion. I've used alot of the braids, fireline, spiderwire, cortland masterbraid and such. I've had the best luck with power pro. Its readily available and very strong.I use 65 and 80 for casting, and 80lb for trolling. Its downsides though are the color fades and it tends to hold a little more water then some of the other braids. All of the lines fray to a point from a use. I would suggest you fill your reels with cheap mono in the 8 to 10lb range and then put 75 or so yards of braid on your reels. It will save you big time. I know alot of guys use 25lb mono to fill their reels but my beef with that is that the heavier mono doesnt pack as tight on the spool as the smaller diameter lines do. When you think about it you dont use much more then 20 to 30 yards of line for most of the season, no need to waste it. At the end of the season or when its looking worn i take the line off and flip the spool. The one braid i would like to try is suffix, i hear and read alot of good on it but never tried it. As for planer boards, i've daveled with inline boards. Never had a fish on them but they have a time and place i'm sure. Trolling shallow flats with multiple people in the boat is definitely one. I fish 90% of the time solo so i cant say i've run them 100s of time. 2nd, they can become a handful if you have floating debris or are trying to troll weedlines. You gotta reel them in, hand the rod off, take the board off and reel the line in and check for weeds and then reset. Alot more time with your lures out of the water then running lures off the boat. The mast system is alot smoother but with that you have the some of the same problems, they pick up floating debris is you have floating weeds. When the fish hits its almost instant that the fish is on, it starts ripping drag and sound similar to a gun shot going off. The mast would get in the way if you wanted to cast, so unless you have storage room for it or plan to troll all the time it could become an inconvience. I would opt for the in lines which are probably around $60 a set before investing in a mast system and trying to make boards for fishing in PA. Like anything, boards are a tool, they have a time and place. Sorry for the rant, finally had time to post my thoughts.

sorry avid i have too totally dissagree with you with the statement that soon as a fish hits with a board it is on that instant..i used planers alot and that just is not true that planer is not directly behind the boat it is off to the side and behind the boat when you are spreading your lines out and have 75 ft of lineout and the lure is say 20ft behind the board and fish hits there is a delay that fish takes up the slack from the board till the line tightens up to the rod before pole loads up to release the drag. its not like a fish hittin a flatline where it is instant. on a board theres alot of line out. but yea boards are a pain and have some downsides like u stated cant run them when theres alot of floatin debris and weeds, which is why im workin on diff setups trying to get away from boards.

Great thoughts AA, and I appreciate it... I think I'm going to forget about the planer boards for now. There are too many other things I need to spend money on. I never thought about filling the spool 3/4 with cheap mono, that's a good idea. I used PowerPro last year and liked how it worked once I got used to it.

my bad avid...never used mast and planers...thought u were refering to inlines,im not talkin bad about inlines i use them alot when i have another person with me and ive got plenty on them, what im refering to is that once a musky hits theres a few seconds before rod loads up since fish has to pop board and pick up the tension to the rod and that few seconds the fish has a chance to let it go since the board tension isnt enough to set the hooks not for a musky anyway , probably for a walleye since it was designed for eyes to begin with.. neverless they do work and is good when u are running 4 to 6 lines that is if the water is good enough .

I seemed to get a lot of birdsnests and knots with powerpro. I've been using spiderwire ultracast. I've used a lot of different lines and they're all pretty good.

I can't remember who it was, but someone mentioned not long ago about how they helped out with a local river musky stocking program. I'm too lazy to go back through posts, but I wanna say it was avidangler? Anyways, I just wanted to let them know that I'd be willing to help out if the group is doing it again this year. I'd love to help keep the populations up. I've found some real beasts in my pool, and I'd like to keep it that way. I don't have much to work with as far as getting the fingerlings where they need to be. I only have a little 14fter with a 9.5hp for now that suits my needs. It would work, but I couldn't cover too much water. If there's any way that I can help though, I'd be down.

Helped stock the Yough the last two years. H2Owolf has all the contact info for the fish commission. It's always good to have help. Our stocking spread 1900 Musky throughout the river.

yep.....much cheaper to build your own. i use berkly coated 80lb steel leaders and 80lb crosslocs and bearing swivels. secret is make sure you buy a real good crimper dont get a cheap one its cheap for a reason. i mainly troll so i make my trolling leaders 2 to 3 ft long, when it gets bent out of shape from a fish or snag just cut it off and tie new one on.

ORIGINAL: tull66 Nobody twists? The Dubro tool is nice but its a one trick pony on single strange wire. Single strand are great for jerkbaits and glidebaits but tend to get bent up pretty quick if you get a fish.
