Nice...

I picked up a couple Wileys, a couple Grandmas, a Leo jerkbait and a ToothyFishMan plug retriever (which I actually bought off Ebay but Frank was cool enough to email me and give it to me in person at the show - along with my $5 for shipping cost).

nice perch baits joel..needless to say ive not had a good day today got stuck havin to go to airport to pick up relatives that flew in for my daughters birthing of first child which doc is inducing labor wed nite at midnite. so i was unable to go to the show got home from airport at noonish decided i was gonna hit the mon which by the way looks awesome and would be first time on the water since mid nov.. which to find out that when i ran the motor in the yard last month i left the key on the on position in the boat for a month and had a completely dead batterry. i couldnt raise the motor to take the transom bar out so i could try to manually pull start, so i gave up heart broken and come home..good news is battery is now fully charged and hopefully i can get out tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about the misfortunes MM...  This looks like it could be a good week for us on the rivers.  I won't be able to make it out until Saturday, at the earliest (with my work schedule all week).  That being said, I'm not really prepared anyway.

I'll be honest, I've half-assed it for the last year and a half and this year I feel I've learned enough and I've read enough to really do this musky thing for real.  I've been buying buying buying for the last couple of weeks and by next weekend I should have all of the equipment I need to get out and do some real responsible river musky fishing.  With all of the other stresses and BS in my life, I'm a SO looking forward to getting back out on the boat.  I need this so bad...

Got to the Butler show today and got a great deal on a new net.  Picked up some new Grandma lures and a lure retriever.  Wanted  some Wiley lures but they were out of the colors I was looking for.  Enjoyed the talk by Howard Wagner.

Also picked up a 6 inch musky train a jointed bobbie bait swimbait a and a rear prop topwater bobbie bait. A red october ninja tube. A leo riffle runner and 8in jerkbait. And I also got some tips on my homemade crankbait adventure for the guy from muskytrain very nice guy all in all I spent to much money lol but I'm sure ill be able to sell them in two years for a third of what I paid for them o well couldn't leave without them

Darn it was just too windy to venture out today..work rest of week including saturday but if i can get home early enough maybe ill have time to get out even if its for 2hrs. I took off work thurs since my daughter is having her labor induced wed nite at midnite and if she can pop that little booger out pretty early i might be on my boat smoking a cigar and netting a muskie or two, they will be easy to find this time of yr,its gettin them to eat so just gotta be there when a window opens up. Glad to hear everyone had good time at show this past weekend.

I was chompin at the bit yesterday but was stuck at work all day...  Saturday - high of 35.  Thinking my time would be better spent working on the boat.

i got out for few hrs this afternoon. i had no luck threw a bulldog marked the fish deep still in their wintering holes. water is up but crystal clear on the mon that is. seen a school of crappie by some stumps i was fishing they were only few ft under the surface too bad im not a crappie fishermen. i even trolled a little done some work on a few trolling lures and needed to test them out. needles to say i got about an inch of sleet in my boat before i got off water but was awesome to hit the water neverless will probably get out again before weeks end. i will post a pick if i get lucky.

Hey guys, I heard Bob Ventorini will be at the 3 rivers meeting on the 14th. You do not need to be a member to attend. He's the SWPa guy from the fish commission so would be a good one to talk with about rivers. I'll try to find out what he's speaking on.

Looking for some advice…
I just bought some new trolling rods and I’m shopping for bulk spools.  What do you guys suggest spooling them with?  I’ve read about some guys that prefer to run mono because they like having the extra stretch to keep from ripping the hook from the fish’s mouth when trolling at speed.  They say it also takes some of the stress off the rod/reel if you get snagged on bottom.
I was just going to buy a bulk spool of 80lb PowerPro and make my own leaders out of heavy mono (I think it’s 120 lb) swivel and snap.  Any thoughts? Thanks!

I for one do not like power pro frays really fast I prefer spiderwire for trolling in 65 pound test and fire line in 65 pound test and I use florocarbon leaders I make myself in 100 pound test hope tis helps

i allways use 50lb spiderwire ive never had a fish break 50lb. plus little thinner diam allows ur lure to get alittle deeper. however this yr im set up different. my local wallmart started carrying power pro up to 65lb test for 10 bucks 0f 150yrds spools, so i spooled all my trolling rods up with the 65lb power pro i dont have a report on it yet till season gets going here soon. as far as mono i know guys that use it only in winter cause it doesnt absorb water and freeze like braid lines, i dont trust mono any othertime dont like the stretch as far as keeping lures from ripping out on high speed trolling just loosen ur drag a little thats all. good luck

Another question...

When you guys troll, do you ever utilize planer boards?

In the limited trolling I have done, I've always just flat lined but I'm wondering if it would be useful to run planer boards given how shallow a lot of the local fishing is around here...

yep sure do....i use the orange church walleye boards, however u need to make an adjustment to them to pull the larger musky lures cause they create alot of drag.. on the bottom of the board is a lead weight that is held on with 2 screws and it is meant to slide forward, well what u need to do take one of the screws out and slide that weight all the way forward till it reaches the front of the board then screw the screw back in making a new hole. now ur ready to pull musky lures and they work great..this yr ive been working on a new trolling scheme trying to eliminate haveing to use boards, the boards are great only drawback i have with them is that there is a short period when the fish first hits there is slack in the line before the rod loads up and ive lost an occasional fish cause of that. but still worth using them.

I was actually thinking about building my own boards.  The only problem I have is that I don't have a mast.  There has to be a simple way to build those too, I would think.

Guess I'm just thinking out loud...
